A few months ago I made my first purchase from this website, based off glowing reviews from the commenters. Oddly enough, my first purchase was a bad hard drive! (Or maybe not odd and people here are just getting really lucky?) Inserting the hard drive just kept rebooting my system, and they told me to return it. The return process was really easy, however, and they really stood by their product. I felt confident enough that I got another hard drive after that incident and the new one has been working flawlessly.

Solid deal, thanks. I've bought so many of these over the past 6 months and had zero issues so far. I'll never shuck another WD drive again.

I bought 4 x 12TB from this seller about six weeks ago. Shipped fast. Packaged VERY WELL. No tax. And they're running great.

Paid $250 for an 18TB WD Gold. This doesn't seem like as good of a deal as some of their other deals have been. Frown
By the time your 5 warranty expires , they will have released 36TB hdds for 150 bucks . Also you will get back a recert if you turn that wd in for repair.
anyone else buying multiple recerts blows away your deal

This is the bottom of thr barrel . 4.42% failure rate per backblaze
I run 2.5 PiB mostly seagate and only had 2 die completely and one was a garbage SMR 8tb
The other died within 24 hours.Cmr...

All my 100+ drives are at 100% health and even the recerts

no one should care about blackblaz as a home user

we aren't running cloud servers pulling 550TB a day read and writes

Guess what the failure rate of all mechanical hard drives is: 100%.
1) if it's used, it's closer to death
2) if it a model that has a high failure rate in a datacenter , then it's closer to death

I want my drive to be as far away from death as absolutely possible, even if it costs $150 more

So yes i do care about backblaze as a home user.

It won't matter as a home user. But whatever makes you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside.

I'd use the money to buy another recert than have to deal with wd or seagate warranty.
The seller here gives a 2 year warranty and no tax . Running 2 disk parity is better than running any hdd by itself no matter how good you think it is

Upon what are you basing that assertion? The Backblaze statistics I've seen…
I thought I was basing that on Backblaze stats but after reviewing their 2022 report it's clear I was wrong. I apologize for that and have edited my comment.

Assuming you back things up properly, Exos may still be worth it. I switched from Ultrastars to Exos because they've cost so much less that it seems unlikely Ultrastar reliability could ever make up the difference, even after any required replacements (in a large enough drive population). I could be wrong and will be looking for deals on Ultrastars from now on as well.

I run several drives from ServerPartDeals in my Synology. Still a little miffed about having to pay return shipping when I had one start showing worrying signs at 31 days (so barely outside of DOA range) , but by self-advance-shipping (by buying another and sending it overnight, then just getting a refund for my dead drive) it all worked out. SPD refunded my suspect drive, no questions asked.

Maybe it's bad strategy (or maybe it's good strategy..), but I run a mixture of drive brands/series, based on what's on sale at the time. As long as they're in the same class of product and drive speed. I have a few WD red Pros, one WD Datacenter HC, and two Seagate Exos drives.

At that time when I was a kiddo, my budget was limited. Hitachi didn't fail me once after the Deskstar series. Backup is no excuse for Segates' shitty reliability. They bought Conner, Maxtor. I had Seagate along with these brands and they are all the drives that failed me in the last 2+ decades. If you MUST buy 2 drives to deal with Seagate's shitty reliability, the actual cost to the storage is double of the attractive price you see.
You always buy two, three price is baked into the cake.

My Exos drives run in my Synology in a small rack next to my desk. They're clickly/loud, but I wouldn't say MUCH louder than WD Red Pros. People sleep in there without complaint (it's an office/guest room.) Not sure I'd want to sleep next to it long-term though. The quietest drives I had were the shucked WD External drives - possibly because they were 5400RPM.

I got two, tested both but only using one. They're working just fine for me. I can't hear any difference in noise vs my older HDD drives.

Many home users don't have the kind of storage needs that entail buying a NAS + 5x18TB drives. So we have to make compromises rather than spend $1500 on a serious storage solution.

Your advice would be more useful if you clarify what your assumptions and illustrating the pros and cons. Then even people who don't have the same needs could benefit from the parts of your advice that make sense to them.

Not sure that I agree that the failure rate for mechanical drives is 100%. I still have some IDE hard drives that are fine, and other SATA drives that I hook up occasionally to back things up. 1 or more of these may very well outlive me.

If i have the choice,
I'll take a new drive, not a used one that's therefore closer to death..and I'll take a drive with .2% failure over one with 4.42% failure .
For $100 more.
