Ironically, the firmware update seems to have made Crucial Storage Executive work even worse with my drive. However, I have yet to notice any issue with actual drive functionality. I think they still have some work to do on this variant.
I think you can tell when the drive was manufactured by the first two or four digits of the serial number. I suspect they're in a YYWW format (Y=year, W=week).
I believe you can tell which hardware variant by the second-to-last digit in the firmware version. They will all be M3CR0XY. X=2 in the original version. X=3 in the first major revision. X=4 in the latest variant (that I know of). The original version had 1GB DRAM per 1TB NAND. I'm not sure about the first major revision but suspect it may have been changed. I know the latest version has 512MB DRAM, regardless of capacity. Technically, it's only a downgrade at 1TB+ capacities (which is what most people are buying now). It's unchanged for the 500GB model and possibly an upgrade for the 250GB model (who buys that???).

I'd like to find out when the DRAM size downgrade happened, since my box says (c)2020-2021, if that means anything.

I have deployed multiple versions of the mx500 over the years, and never have had any problems. The older ones all have made it 5 years without a hiccup.
