Expect to wait a really long time to get privacy for these sized trees. I bought 6' tall ones 3 years ago, planted them 4 ft apart as recommended and still not even close to a privacy fence. They are close to 12ft tall now. Probably 2 more years I'm guessing it'll take to get complete privacy. So for these 1-2' ones, I'm guessing it would take 7-10 years probably.

The trees definitely grow height wise quickly, the issue is they are much thinner on top, so you do get privacy 4 ft or lower when they're 10 feet tall, but wide open spaces on everything above 4 ft high. I'm in NY btw so ymmv

if you want a healthy, strong growing tree that wont be semi stunted for the first couple years, buy local. trees grown in california are going to take a while to adjust to growing in the northeast, etc. high mortality rate, etc. price looks good till you factor in all of that.

I planted 20 - 5' arborvitae from costco in 2010 and they make a thick fence now. I lost 2 along the way, but have filled in the gaps. At the time, they were $20 each, now I believe they are $30, and you have to get them quick, because they sell out fast.

How long do these take to grow to 8 to 10 feet?
Depends on the location .. I planted 12 in the Chicago area and the 1/2 that had full sun grew about 2ft per year while the others in shade grew maybe 6" - 1ft tops

Would these grow in a (very large) container?

Arborvitae = Deer Food
I realize this variety is deer resistant, but when the ground is covered with snow and there's nothing else to eat, The deer will enjoy these as well.
it's frustrating to watch these grow for years and then get hit with one hard winter and poof.

I know. Everyone has this style around here(NY) 🙄. I'm looking into Cypress like the ones all over California. Beautiful, bright green, super tall, but they "fill out" way higher up.

FYI from northern Ohio: I bought 20 of these 1'-2' trees from a reputable tree farm in 2020, they are about 3'' tall right now. They grew maybe 3-6" from 20-21, another 6-9" from 21-22, and 6-9" last year. By way of comparison- my neighbors planted 6' versions of these literally a month after I planted mine and they have grown 2-3' in the same time. I would expect 9-12" growth this year, and that's with ironite applied liberally.

Also: The deer love to rub their antlers against them in the fall, so I've had to put protection around them for now.

Yep. I bought some that said "deer resistant." One morning I woke up and 2 of them were gone at the top. I was devestated lol

Deer will eat these. From what I've read if you want true deer resistant bushes you have to get juniper. There are some juniper varieties that grow vertical and can be used as a privacy screen. I haven't tried it personally yet but I do know that my neighbors have had their arborvitae snacked on for years.

How far apart should these be placed for decent privacy in 5-10 years? The listing says 8-14 ft in between centers, but that seems like a pretty big gap.

Arbovitae are some of the slowest growing trees out there. During peak growth perhaps 12 inches/year max. So everyone will need to ask themselves... Is it really worth the wait?

I've never seen green giant arborvitaes at Walmart in my area. Emerald Green arborvitaes? Definitely
I've seen mint, army, and forest green.

I think it's all regional anyway. Wish someone other than Lowe's would sell Green Giants around here (NH)
