It could be China's government controlling it all. EV makers are trying to acquire as much lithium and cobalt as much as they can. Idk if GPUs need these things but if their government set a policy like Nintendo is doing to keep prices up well, not much consumers can do there.

Nvidia and AMD are both Chinese companies right? Hopefully US based Intel will soon start producing cards worth the competition.
I think they're both US multinational companies. They both have Taiwanese CEOs though, who both happen to be related to each other in some way. They're both publicly traded companies so they have an obligation to the shareholders to make a profit. It's less the Chinese government pushing them and more their shareholders are forcing their hand.

Icic. I wonder if this 'make less to sell less' strategy will make sense in the end.
If there's a factory they have to put out a certain amount of products they're used to putting out. Like there's a certain point that makes the manufacturer worthwhile, like a sweet spot u know?

Why waste overhead, salaries to keep 1000 employees inside to make half the cards that they used to make...
See, all this nonsense about making less cards is just PR bull. A made up story to explain/excuse why they are keeping prices high.
They are probably not making less cards at all. Just plain keeping prices high to maximize profit.

Any thing above mid tier, you could just assume you will need 4 slots of space because that's what you'll need to allocate for it. 2.5 to 3 for the card itself, then another open slot for air flow for the fans. It's one of those trends I'm not a huge fan of.
but you need a huge fan. what a conundrum

They're locked into contracts with TSMC that were made during the Covid/Mining heydey. And because demand has plummeted, TSMC wouldn't allow them to cancel any orders (since the factories would be idle without it). TSMC is the most advanced chip company on the planet and manufactures almost everything other than Intel CPUs.

Both Nvidia and AMD, according to their own financial records, have record levels of inventory. But they've seemingly colluded and agreed if they both only ship just enough to meet current demand, they can maintain their high margins and not get into any price wars. It'll be interesting to see if they eventually have to crack or if they can just wait it out till some of their manufacturing contracts expire and they can scale back supply.

Ah thanks for that. So it's up to the consumers again.
They'd eventually have to come to reasonable prices IF consumers don't buy as much.

So AMD ordered chips at a PREMIUM during Covid. If they sell at a what we perceive as a reasonable price their profit margins will shrink.
If they keep prices high and people don't buy as much AMD will still suffer.

Looks like Lisa and Nvidia are stuck in a hard place right now.
If they put it a reasonable price they can expect to move stock for sure. What they're doing now is kind of dumb. They made a mistake and they're wanting consumers to pay for it.
