I bought one a few years ago. Mine did not smell funny though. The cats love it & use it every day. After years of use, it's still holding up fairly well. The base is heavy & study which helps keeping it from flipping over. One of our cats even jumps on top & it has never fallen. Definitely a recommended buy, if you have cats.

They aren't stopping them. The topper is a little cushion to make it easier and more comfortable for the cat to climb on top.

I have 2 of these. The oldest is 12 years old and still in decent condition. It's tall and sturdy. Perfect for my oversized Maine Coons.

There's a reason this is +29 up votes at $30. If I saw posts as good as these for $20 I would buy them immediately but I haven't seen it myself. These are the best posts I've seen for the price for durability and balance and can handle heavy cats putting their full stretch/body weight on it without any issue. I have a 15lb cat that does a full stretch and scratch on it and it barely moves.

I have one of these. As far as cat scratchers go, it looks pretty good and is very sturdy. My cat never uses it though :-(
