thought this was surely an error when it said: USB fast charging and LCD display on a freaking set of dumbells LOL

but it wasnt. AND it requires a charge and connection to change the weight? oh boy. recipe for disaster.

So true! A completely unnecessary "feature." The Q&A section confirms that you cannot change weights without power to its rechargeable batteries (apparently can also be plugged in via USB-C). But the cherry on top is that their normal 1-year manufacturer warranty does NOT apply on purchases made at BestBuy. So if the mechanism breaks, you're SOL and literally have a heavy, expensive (paper)weight.

With that said, at $1/pound, that's still an absolutely incredible price on a pair of adjustable dumbbells. Might be worth the risk for many.

I actually worked on one of the apps for these dumbells.....

The USB powers the base station. You can change the weight with the buttons on it, but the "handle" has to be docked and the USB powers the motors in the handle to lock into different settings of plates.

You can also download the app (android / ios) and adjust the dumbbells over bluetooth when they are docked instead of using the buttons (this is not the most useful feature ever...). Additionally the dumbbells have accelerometers on them and the app can count how many reps / how much weight you've done per set. The dumbbells do a bunch of stuff to determine how idle they've been to figure out what a set is, where your accelerometer ends for start and end of a single curl etc. All this bluetooth related stuff would require a charged handle. But if you are just changing weight it shouldn't need to be fully charged.

All the bluetooth stuff / app isn't really required if you just want to use the buttons to change the weight, and they basically just become adjustable weight dumbbells. but you have to use the motorized dock to adjust , instead of a manual adjustment like say bowflex dumbbells

It's like you're narrating my very thoughts. I really wanted to justify the purchase given the price point, but ultimately cancelled based on all the reviewers + 0 warranty. Thanks for tipping me on the side of logic.

Lots of 1 star reviews to read on Best Buy's website. A bit risky.

Seems like they are trying to dump inventory through BestBuy with no repercussions since there is no warranty.

Best Buys website says 1year warranty. I'd bet anything that Best Buy has a contract with them to cover the warranty in house, which could be why the MFG says they don't cover purchases from Best Buy. That would mean you'd just take it there and get a store credit for what you paid +taxes on your purchase. Which, honestly is going to be better then whatever warranty service they provide (which might include things like you having to pay to ship the heavy ass weights to them)

I use to work at Best Buy, 95% of all MFG warranties on purchases there are taken care of in store via return or repair. This obviously wouldn't be a repairable item.

Any way to use these as dumb-bells? Or are you required to use the "smart" features to change the weight?
