Do you need to play Crono Trigger first?
It's very loosely connected, there's a few characters from Trigger that will pop up in Cross. Other than that though it is totally a separate story/game. You will be ok playing it on its own, you might just miss out on a few references and Easter eggs to Trigger.

FYI the Kingdom Hearts games are cloud streaming only, you will need a very strong internet connection to play them otherwise you will have lots of input delay.

You will have a much better experience playing them elsewhere.

The Switch version of Chrono Cross has been widely criticized for being an awful port. Many claim it's actually worse than the original, and Square effectively ruined it with a lazy, half-assed reproduction.

Metacritic user score: 4.3 / 10

You've been warned.

Will Crisis Core ruin FF7 for me? Haven't played either.

Any opinions on FFIX?

No – Chrono Cross is about as much a sequel to Chrono Trigger as Super Mario Bros. 2 is a sequel to Super Mario Bros.

Chrono Cross is really a sequel to the visual novel Radical Dreamers, which is included in this Switch release (but which, IMHO, is a pretty blah experience, particularly if you're not a huge visual novel fan, as I'm not). At some point in its development, a decision was made to bring it into the Chrono Trigger series, but the game does not have any real intrinsic connection. (The contemporaneous PS1 RPG Xenogears has a bit more of a Chrono Trigger-esque "feel," in my opinion, though it has never been released for Switch.)

There certainly *are* plot points in Chrono Cross which make explicit connections with Chrono Trigger, but no familiarity with the prior game is needed and if anything, familiarity with the prior game will only frustrate your expectations. The battle system, characters, and plot are all fairly different, and apart from the occasional plot connection, Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger are not much more similar than any other two Squaresoft JRPGs.

Chrono Cross is, in the end, a good JRPG that has always suffered in comparison with the GOAT JRPG.

That said, if you haven't played Chrono Trigger... do yourself a favor and play it!
Xenogears feels like a CT sequel because it was initially meant to be one. The lead developer and his wife wrote the story and much of the game to be the sequel to Chrono Trigger. When Square gave that title to Chrono Cross, Xenogears was given a chunk of the Chrono Trigger team to release as a separate IP, so it makes sense that it would feel more like the sequel than, ironically, the sequel.

While the critique is most likely true, I would never trust Metacritic user scores with all the 0/10 and 10/10 review bombing/shilling for people that never even played the game. And this applies to pretty much every game.

FFVII is also $7.99 on PSN. For those who are not aware. The PS4/Switch release of FFVII is a re-release, not the 1997 version. Graphics are cleaner, plus they added 2 built in cheats. One where you avoid battles, another where you level up very fast.
There is also a speed up cheat and another that basically makes you invincible too. Full limit bar, full hp, full mp. Only used it to fill the limit bar a few times so I'm not sure if it revives KOed members or if nothing can actually kill you.

This SMB analogy comparing CC and CT is pretty off. The fact that you said that there are plot points with explicit connections proves my point. SMB2 wasn't even a Mario game, it was Doki Doki Panic and then reskinned with Mario characters.

If you think CT and CC's stories aren't relevant then I think you may have missed the point of the final conversation at Opassa Beach and therefore the ending.

DO play CT first. The mystery of CC is basically figuring out what happened to everyone from the first game, which completely enriches the CC experience.

If you haven't played I Am Setsuna and you enjoyed Chrono Trigger, I really recommend it. A lot of the development team worked on it and there's a ton of CT references in the game. It really feels like a spiritual sequel. I did find it to be rather short for a JRPG, though.

It was very recently patched to fix the frame rate issues:

Crisis core won't ruin FF7. In fact, it will probably make FF7s story make a lot more sense on the initial playthrough.

The game is currently the same price on steam. If you have a steamdeck I recommend getting it there as you can play the game on max settings at 720p whereas the switch port is a downgrade visually

Haven't played crisis core but 7 and 9 are my favorites. I don't know about the switch port but the ps game is phenomenal.

Kingdom hearts 1.5-2.5 worth it? Is this the only time it's been 20$?
