Steam Deck is without a doubt the best tech purchase I've made in a long time.

If you are somewhat tech savvy I recommend the 64GB model paired with a 512GB or 1TB micro SD card. You can always upgrade the internal SSD if necessary. The issue with the 64GB is shaders must be stored on internal drive, not SD card, so between the OS and shaders the drive fills up fast.

If you don't feel like messing with opening the deck up, go for the 256GB model paired with a 1TB micro SD card.

The 512GB model only worth it for anti glare screen if you feel like you'll be playing it often outside.

Some must have programs for deck:

Decky loader - plugin manager for themes, power tools, and much more

EmuDeck- old school games emulation

Steam Rom Manager - adds your emulation game to steam, categorized by system with full game box and cover art

I also highly recommended a 45w power bank, the decks biggest weakness is battery life, you'll want a battery pack for travel

Be aware not all games run out of the box. Some require tweaking or custom proton versions to run properly.

ProtonDB.com lists game compatibility for all games and is a great resource, it's also a plug-in for decky

It has not. The company has stated very recently there is not a new version coming anytime soon. Stop spreading BS

There is only one m.2 slot so you'll remove the 64gb ssd and change it with a 1tb ssd. There are walkthroughs on youtube and from Valve on how to replace it.

Those who own the deck, would you take it on an international trip with you or it's bit too big for that.
Honestly if I were traveling internationally, I'd want to take in the sights and not spend all my time playing games on the deck. But there's nothing stopping you. It's big but it comes with a handy case and can fit in a backpack pretty easily.

If you are computer savvy at all you can buy the 64GB version and upgrade the SSD to a bigger one. I am rocking a 1tb nvme in my 64GB model.

64gb + 500gb sd has been enough for me. I was worried about space before I got my deck but managing space hasn't been an issue. I keep a bunch of indies installed and cycle out a handful of large games.

Is there anyway to get my Gamepass games working here? I see I can download anything that it is my steam library but I have Gamepass for most of the stuff I like to play?
Is it basically useless for me?
What most people are advising is installing a browser like chrome or edge then doing some tweaks to the launch command to make the browser launch to the gamepass cloud. This wouldn't be playing cloud PC games, they are Xbox games playing on the cloud. There's an installer for Epic Game Store games. People are hoping microsoft just drops UWP and then everything would work on Linux.

Coming from a switch playing xcom all day. I returned the steam because the bulkiness and all the buttons make it not so comfortable to hold for extended periods of time.
It's the exact opposite for me. The Switch hurts my hands but the Steam Deck feels perfect. I was initially surprised by how light it is.

Steam Deck 7.0" screen with much lower resolution, 60Hz and IPS LED display with 400nit brightness...S22 Ultra has 6.8" screen with MUCH higher resolution, 120Hz refresh and it's an AMOLED, 1750 nits

The physical difference is only .2", but I have a much easier time seeing details without my reading glasses at the lower resolution on the Deck. Depends on the game too...many of the compatible games have been tweaked to present well on the Deck.
The closer the screen is to a perfect square aspect ratio, aka 1:1 aspect ratio, the more surface area it covers (when keeping diagonal screen size constant). For example, a 10in x 1in screen has a listed screen size of 10.1" in it's specs but it only has 10 square inches of area, or "screen real estate". A 7in x 7in screen also has a screen size of about 10in but it's surface area (screen real estate) is 49 square inches.

This is why long phone screens just seems so much smaller than somehing like a Steamdeck, because they actually are!

You have to be a little careful with that kind of setup. AFAIK the shaders download on the main drive and dont go away if you uninstall the game. This can lead to a full main drive and cause some issues down the road. This is fixable but I've read that it is a pain.

Is there a legit way to put your Switch games on it? Would rather play some on the Deck rather than the Switch.
You can install Yuzu which is a Switch emulator. Then you can either make a copy of your game (I think it's 100% legit) or find a copy of the game online (not legit) and play it on the steam Deck. Yuzu is a little tricky to install - I highly recommend going to reddit r/steamdeck and searching for guides there. Feel free to message me if you have any additional questions! Some games don't work great through Yuzu. For example, it's usually recommended to play BOTW on the Wii Emulator instead of the Switch emulator because it runs better that way (not sure why)... but some games run great.

I really do love my Steam Deck and I wish I had more free time to use it. It's made me use my living room more often. I play games that don't feel right to play on a beast of a PC and sitting at a desk. One thing that really increased it's value is the fact that I have a huge Steam catalog. Also, the OS kind of brings you into a Steam world on the device where everything is about the games you own or want to own, unlike a desktop or laptop where the environment is not exclusively Steam based (if that makes any sense). I've also found myself buying games just for the deck, like the new TMNT game or the Skywalker Saga.

I haven't modded mine much but I have added Plex, GeForce Now, and Gamepass Cloud and they all work great.

I thought that I would only be playing more casual and retro games on mine, but once you install and play a recent AAA game on it, it makes you want to push it and see how much it can do. Now I'll play any game that feels good playing with a controller.

Im planning on taking on my trip soon. I also purchased some QOL things to make it easier to travel with. A 45W charger brick from anker that is much smaller, a 65W 20,000 mAh battery in case the flight doesnt have an outlet, and a shell similar to the killswitch so that I can just throw my device in a bag without the bulky case.

Forgive what I'm sure is an ignorant question but can it playback local media files as well?

I travel a lot and often will borrow the kids' switch to provide some fast entertainment while sitting around during a layover. But the one thing the switch can't do is playback media (music/video) files from local storage. IF the Steam deck can do that and play the games in my steam account then I'm sold.

Yes, easily. It's basically a Linux PC so you have the full Linux desktop baked in

Mostly depends where you're going. When I went to India I had no issues, but Israel's security is brutal, and sometimes they want to take apart your electronics depending on the purpose of your visit. I was there on business and maybe they found it suspicious why a grown man in my feild was carrying a "game" system. I would just check with the customs office or check online what the local government does when transporting electronic devices across their border.

Size wise, it was no problem. The deck and case will fit inside a brief case or backpack, easy peasy,

We are going to Japan, so safety should be ok. I'm just trying to find an excuse to buy it. I doubt I have much time to play it. The kid part of me just thinks it's such a cool piece of tech.
