Funny story, I ended up using a surveillance drive as a desktop drive.. oddly enough it was the "approved" drive to go into the Direct TV DVR add-on (basically just a usb dock you hooked up to the DVR) we've stopped using since then when we stopped using DirectTV... and it works great as a desktop drive too. I did some research apparently surveillance drives are just fine to use as desktop drives in general and my surveillance drive has been working great for backups too, just recently restored a windows backup drive image from it actually using macrium reflect.
I should qualify that statement though ... I'm using the drive to store files, given how cheap SSD drives are I definitely would NOT advise using it as say your C/Windows drive ... if your motherboard has a slot for an m2 drive get one of those , even the M2's are selling relatively cheap compared to their normal price right now... or if your MB doesn't support M2's the crucial MX500 2.5 form factor drives are selling $52 for 1 TB size right now on best buy and newegg (they go in and out of stock at amazon for about the same price too)

I decided to grab three during the last deal. I felt it was probably time to upgrade the three twelve-year-old (yes, 12 years!) 2TB drives that had been in (mostly) constant use during that span.
I've been very happy with these drives so far and performance seems great for my NAS application.
... if your motherboard has a slot for an m2 drive get one of those , . .

Also me when HDD price doesn't fall: price is too high, wait until it falls.
Yeah, either they allow or they don't.
