Not sure how many are left at Costco for $399. Apple EDU is $499 for the M2 if you qualify

This deal for $699 matches Apple EDU, the 512GB is great but if you want 16GB of RAM you'll need to order through Apple or a retailer that allows custom orders.

DO NOT BUY 8GB is you are into music production -- editing 25 audio track on LOGIC PRO X/video production --- editing 4k videos on FINAL CUT PRO X .... it will throw memory error/crash occasionally....
16GB and 512 GB HDD ..a must have for power users... for regular /gentle use (browsing, watching movies, connecting to work vpn ) 8GB is gud enuf....FROM MY PERSONAL EXP

If you can still get the 399 Costco m1, I would get that over this. 75% price increase is not worth the upgrade from m1 to m2 and double the internal storage. The best upgrade would be to increase the ram, but that's an even bigger price jump.

The 16/256 for 680 on Apple Edu is the one you want if you want an entry level mac.

Correct answer.

You _can_ add external storage (less of an issue on a desktop computer but still not ideal). You_cannot_ add external RAM.

8GB RAM is the limiting factor. If you primarily use a phone or tablet for literally everything and just want to have a desktop machine around in case you need to type a document sometimes and otherwise don't do much with it then this is fine (especially if your tablet/phone is from Apple).

Beware the brainwashed masses who will wave their hands and tell you that 8GB of RAM is magically somehow "better" because it happens to be soldered onto an Apple SoC rather than onto a removable module inserted into a Dell/HP/Acer/whatever.

There is no magic that makes 8GB of RAM in Apple products any different than 8GB of RAM in anything else. It's the same RAM chips! Apple does not make RAM chips.

Anyone who smugly pipes up with "Unified Memory" as a counterpoint doesn't at all understand what that marketing term means (spoiler: it's shared memory with quick access, not _more capacity_) nor how RAM works in general.

I thought the 256 was slow hd, not so much about the capacity as much as the speed sux

Apple generally supports computers for about 6 years. The M1 came out in 2020.. you can do the math from there.

That is the question to ask.
If you are doing regular stuff, email, browser, office. 8GB is just fine.
Even if you are doing light adobe Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere (1080p) it is fine.

But as another poster said, if you are working on 4k video, multiple tracks, 3D, or other high end intensive work, yeah get 16GB and at least 512 (if talking M2 for faster storage).

The 256GB M1 uses 2x 128GB modules. The 256GB M2 uses 1x 256GB module. That is the difference that causes the 256GB M2 to be slower than the 256GB M1. Now, if you put on your reading glasses, you might notice that the model in this deal is not the 256GB model so none of that applies here.
