This is a good deal with shipping on just the unit but there will be additional costs to install.

Like an A/C heat pump it needs a concrete or composite concrete pad to sit on. You will likely need an electrician to connect it to your house and you may need to coordinate with your electric company for certain aspects of the installation like the auto transfer. Unless you have natural gas and get the conversion (I think a conversion is possible) you will also need a large propane tank installed (capacity of 100 to 250 gallons) by a propane company and coordinate with them for filling when needed/ahead of storms, etc. The tank is pretty big and needs to be within so many feet of the generator. These require annual maintenance that you may be able to do yourself or it's around $100 to $150 to have Generac do it. The 10 year warranty seems nice but 10 years of annual maintenance would be better. Finally these generators are big and heavy. I don't think you will be able to move it in place with a dolly.

I had a quote for purchase and install from a Generac dealer and installation was 30% or more of the quote. I never went through with it because installation seemed to be where they were gouging. The coordination with your power company should be free or minimal. Obviously electricians vary by area. I think the dealer had me coordinate with the propane company for install of the tank. I know Lowes sells Generacs. I would be interested in how much they charge for installation.

FYI, this comes with a service rated 200A transfer switch. If your home does not have a 200A service, code prevents you from installing this because it has to be the first means of disconnect and has to be sized to your service panel.

I have this exact setup for about 1.5 years now. Works just as you'd expect. There are definitely more costs in other parts that are needed (base pad, piping, surge protector, the delay thingy). I went with Costco back then. All in it was $12,500 minus the 10% they gave me back on a Costco card, so $11,250.
At the time generators we're on backorder for 6 months or more. Sounds like they've gotten ahead of the supply issues now.

I'm sure it sounds stupid, but can you run a 4 ton AC on this? I'm finding I most likely can't on solar with a battery back up ONLY. Will this run a 4 ton AC? Thanks
It should run it fine. I have 2 a/c on the same generator (a 3 ton and 2 ton) and they only pulled 30amps with the rest of the house running.

Obviously depends what else you are running. If there were any issues, all you would need to do would be to add a soft start to the AC which is a few hundred dollars. The problem with AC is usually starting watts not running watts.

Wow, so much silliness in this thread.

First, these definitely aren't for everyone. If your power rarely or never goes out, of it it's only out for a couple of hours, this probably isn't for you.

IF you don't have some medical condition requiring constant power, this might not be for you either.

If you are fine with getting by using an outdoor grill and maybe a portable heater, this might not be for you either.

Me ? I had a parent on 24/7 oxygen and who used a BiPap. Her hospital bed was electric and she could raise and lower the head and feet by herself.

Power went out recently and 15 seconds later, my 20KW Generac kicked on and started running. Every single circuit and outlet in my house had power. All my appliances worked, including the furnace.

For my own needs, I didn't have to run a single extension cord. I didn't have to worry about a gas tank running dry. I didn't have to worry about turning off X, Y or Z so that I could run A, B and/or C at the same time.

Eventually, some extension cords were run to some of my outside outlets. I was able to provide some power to 5 of my neighbors so that they could run certain things in their houses.

in the end, half of our neighbors was out of power for 48 hours, that included 3 neighbors behind me who drew power from my house.

My power, and that of neighbors on each side of me (and across the street) was out for a total of 64 hours. My Generac ran during that entire time. I only shut it down for 15 minutes at the 48 hour mark to check the oil level in it.

I've had a couple of other power outages over the last 10 years that I've had this generator. One could argue that I've used to for 10 days total in 10 years and since it cost me about $7k in total, that it wasn't worth the $700 per day. That's somewhat of a "hind sight" argument. It's like saying that paying car insurance every year is a waste because you haven't had an accident yet.

I paid $7K for peace of mind, and to make sure that IF and WHEN the power did go out, I wouldn't have any concerns.

For me, it was money well spent.
If this were $7000 installed, I'd buy it in an instant, but its more like $15,000 in my area.

A Tesla battery would be abt 11k. At that price did you consider a battery instead of generator?

I think he was being sarcastic.

This generator is rated at 22,000 watts an Xbox uses less that 200 watts so it may be able to power more than 3 Wink
Hmm, you might be right.

Was seriously considering a generator but am thinking I will put the $8-9k towards solar panels and we will go EV with our next vehicle (which becomes my whole house battery). The payback is a different calc if you are debating a whole house generator and you get the whole house benefit. Am I wrong?

The description says LP or NG. Does that mean it ships with a conversion kit?

You need to have an ample connection for the charger to power your house off of EV batteries, and not all EVs support this functionality.

Almost $10K for incidentals and installation seems a bit high.

Just buy solar and a powerwall … it will provide a ROI EVERY SINGLE DAY AND CAN NEVER RUN OUT OF FUEL.

I have the Costco/Honeywell version of this on natural gas. Very pleased and zero regrets. Cost 1200 to plumb and install transfer panel. after 12 days of no power during Sandy this is a no brainer. Realtor said generators are expected these days…

Install price can vary from one company to another. It also depends on what all needs to be done. For mine, the generator went onto part of the driveway and is about 15ft from the meter. All that required was a 15ft run of black pipe. The wiring of the transfer switch was pretty straightforward as well.

Is a full house generator the hip thing now? All I see are generator deals on SD.

also, terrible reviews.

Here in rural Maine Id kill for one. Well not really, but it would be pretty nice to have. Power goes out here atleast a few times a year, sometimes half dozen. Thankfully its always comes back on within 24 hours so I haven't really gone this route.

We do have two smaller portable generators and a 700watt hour LiPo battery pack thingy tho.

Anywho, anyone happen to have a good deal on a generator half this size with 50 amp automatic transfer switch?

Looks like Costco is now selling the Honeywell version, 22k for 4899.99 after 500 dollars off. It also incudes a 200A transfer switch. Valid 3/35 - 3/26. Short window.

I have this generator and I bought it at my Lowes one day on clearance with a 10% off coupon for about $2000. It was a customer special order that was returned. It cost me $3000 for the electrician to install it and $2500 for the gas company to run gas to my house off the street so I'am all in for $7500-$8000. Its peace of mind for us because of hurricanes. Best slick deal I ever got. However, I will tell you that if your area is lightning prone, you better get a whole house surge protector installed first. If you have a power surge, it will blow the power panel and its a $500 part. Eventually I did get Generac to give us a new panel under warranty, but the process is long and I bought a new one off EBAY in the meantime. So long story short, I have a spare brand new power panel in case it ever happens again because even the surge protector from the power company isn't without flaws.
