The ending is fairly predictable as well. It's... "a take" on FF1. I bet it's fine if you like these style of combat games, but there are just so many other great games to play that time is more of a factor than cost for most.

No, just search development history for this game. Nioh had a long development as well, which explains why both games similar approach to gameplay.

Tetsuya Nomura was brought in to help give the game identity and make FF1 connection. Team Ninja was busy with other ninja gaiden and DOA related stuff, as well as trying to get NIOH finished. This game was always in the back burner for team ninja.
You can find info when exploring some of the Japanese interviews and articles that were covering this game back then.
