Consumer Reports shows that these ain't that good. Aprilaire takes the crown, with Lennox and Filtrete (the latter half the prices of those) very close.

HDX gets only a 40 rating and is not recommended. The others are 70+.

going to Aprilaire website, their filters are 4"-6" thick, how many people have commercial building-grade air conditioners installed in their homes taking these filter sizes?

A 4" box can be installed. Then again, Filtretes are very competitive in performance and come in 1" thickness.

Product Description:	HDX filters are constructed of a durable, moisture-resistant frame with wire supported media for strength and rigidity. HDX filters are easy to replace making change-outs quick and keeping indoor air quality at its optimal level while protecting your HVAC unit and allowing it to perform efficiently.
