I'll +1 on the horse stall mats from TSC. However, a couple things to be aware of:
1. They stink and have a really strong tire smell. That'll last for a week or two. Any time you move them, you'll stir up the smell again. But once they're stagnant for a week or two, they're fine.
2. They very stiff. You're not going to roll them up and put them in your trunk. If you don't have some way to transport them while they're laying flat, then you probably should get a buddy with a pickup truck to help you. Technically, yes you can roll them up and put them in the back of an SUV. I did that. I was also spent an hour rubbing off the black rubber that was all over the back of the SUV after I took it out.
3. They're really heavy duty. These foam mats are almost like marshmallows in comparison.
4. They're pretty hard. They're not soft and cushiony like these foam mats. The foam mats are really quite comfortable to walk on barefoot. Those rubber mats are almost as hard as a hardwood floor on your feet, but are good for heavy duty equipment (like a treadmill, weights, etc.)
5. The horse stall mats aren't exactly cheap for the square footage. But they're night-and-day different from the foam mats.

How strong is the rubber smell? Does it last a while? Thinking of placing them in the indoor carpeted game/exercise room.

Mine didn't smell at all when I got them straight from the store. I couldn't even smell them in the car. But when I got home, I washed them on my driveway with a hose, cleaned them with simple green, then left them to air dry until the sun went down before bringing them into my house.

Just make sure the mats you get are treated with waterproofing. At my TS, they had the mats laying in their outside area. Get a water bottle and sprinkle a bit on the mat. The water should bead up and not soak into the mat. There was one mat I tested that wasn't waterproofed and the water was soaked right up by the mat. The smell from that mat was extremely strong.

If you don't have a large car, you can roll them up and get a ratchet strap to keep them from unraveling. I was able to fit 5 rolled up mats in my Civic hatchback

Overall, horse stall mats are an excellent purchase for home gyms compared to foam tiles. TS sometimes has 10% off coupons so keep an eye out if you want a slicker deal.

Also, horse stall mats are HEAVY! Moving them is a workout itself. Don't think you are going there to buy 10 or something by yourself.

They are meant to hold +1000lb animals, so they are have duty and weigh a ton.

These are pictured as squares, so do we think they're 12x12 or 24x24? Listing says 12x24. 24 x 24 would get the 144 sq ft.

In most cases you don't want foam you want rubber. Foam is not very durable. It will wear quickly.

Rubber mats will last a long time, protect your floors, withstand cleaning.

agreed, bought some foam mats (not these particular ones) and have been using them in my workout room. The foam is warping and starting to disconnect/separate where they join to other mats. Not bad enough to replace yet, though

I just replaced these exact foam mats with this type in mine. They are heavy as hell but so much more durable

They had the 1" thick by 24' square (6pcs) at $15.79 in October on amazon. Haven't seen a deal similar to that since (on the 1" thickness option). Hopefully this sale is a sign that they are getting their inventory back up for hopefully another similar deal soon. They've been wanting $35-50 for the same equivalent for most of the past 4-5 months.
I initially bought some of these to put under the treadmill, hoping to quiet it down. It wasn't really effective as it caused it to slide around on the floor. The grandkids saw them and built a box that they could hide in, then break out of to scare each other.
I bought some of those 1" ones you spoke of, and they hold up much better. The grandkids build all sorts of "hide outs" and mazes to play in. The ½" don't hold up very well, if you go 2 or more high for the walls, and put the roof on. Alternating the 1" & ½" hold up fairly well.
If you are buying to add on to others, one thing to remember is that different brands don't always connect with each other.
By the way, the ½" are $15 for 6.

I'm going to second, third, and forth the recommendation for stall mats. The "puzzle-piece" foam flooring only good for light duty, maybe daycare or kids playroom type environment. If your home/garage gym has barbell and bumper plates, you need to bite the bullet, or save up for stall mats.
On top of what people already have mentioned, I will add that you need to make sure there is some kind of texture on the bottom. The first pair I bought is completely smooth on both sides, this prevents air flow and I had some mildew issue after only a few months in my garage (moisture seeping up from the concrete, i assume). In the So Cal area, stall mats are running $65-85 each 4x6 mat. If you don't want to deal with smell, shop for "virgin rubber" mats. Happy lifting!
