Am currently in the market for a decently sized external hard drive and came across this deal from B&H Photo for a 12TB Seagate external hard drive. With the automatically applied $120 coupon, it'll be $160 pre tax with free shipping. Hope this helps some others out in the same boat as me!

Nd this 12 TB goes for 160??
Mmmm.....idk mannnnn idk.

Still tho, think i might just go for it

This is not a sata or NVME SSD. It's older style spinning disk drive (HDD) inside. Good for data storage but not running programs/games off of.

I'd wait for the 12TB WD passport that goes on sale around 160. Been on sale twice the past month. WD > seagate

Does anyone know which drive is inside this external enclosure? Google shows that it might be their exos series inside, which is an enterprise level drive and would be fantastic for this price.

I just bought a 5tb at costco for $70, I think your price estimates might be a bit dated

So tempting to jump in as my 5TB backup drives are getting nearly full. However, assuming this is also an SMR drive at such capacity, reading/writing speed gonna be a PITA, especially as it gets full.

I'll pass for now, will rethink my backup strategy to spread over smaller drives for now, hopefully the slow SSD drives will get bigger and cheaper soon (already have the fast ones as main internal drives)

I hear/read that, but that hasn't been my experience. My external HDD is Seagate, and I've been using it for 7 yrs now. It's been on most of that duration too (aside from power saving that puts it to sleep, I think). I'm surprised by how long this is holding up.

Not a SMR drive. They only made those from 500 GB - 8 TB.

Seagate has this handy page telling you what sizes SMR came in:

Same. Have this same enclosure in 8TB for probably 5 years, always connected. May go for this one too.

What about running movies/music for something like a Plex server?

You'll have no trouble running a Plex server off of this at all.
