Here's additional information to my message above. We were thrilled when we researched and found the "Thuja Green Giant" trees back in the early 2000s when we moved into our newly built home and had some neighbors that we wanted to "fence" away. They were absolutely buried in the winter and every single one survived multiple winters.

Here are the progress pics, and you'll find a lot of nursery's online that sell them too. I can't speak to the Costco quality, just that this species of evergreen is perfect for us.

Link to our progress pics from 2005 to 2021:

2005 [ibb.co]
2008 [ibb.co]
2011 [ibb.co]
2014 [ibb.co]
2021 [ibb.co]

I think ours were stunted a bit by the rough winters, in different climates they likely grow much faster, if anyone wants better pics of the full view of them today, I can post tomorrow.
As a heads up, we planted some 20 years ago as a privacy line between our neighbor and us, and they are absolutely amazing. They are extremely hardy, fast growing, deer resistant and have grown into absolutely amazing trees. I cannot recommend them enough. Ours started as the size of a branch. These can easily be created from branches of mature trees. This of course assumes that all of these are similar to the online nursery we originally purchased ours. Our soil type is a bit on the sandy side, not sure if that makes a difference either.

Plant at least 6-8 feet apart for a fence type privacy barrier.
It sounds like you returned them because you didn't care for them properly and they either died or didn't grow well. Don't do this. This is what causes companies to nerf their return policies. Don't be part of the problem.

Too bad these trees are so ugly when they grow out. Decent privacy hedge I guess but they're not attractive plants.

These trees need to be pruned to look better.

Are there ever deals on emerald green arborvitae?

I've never tried to plant trees before but apparently these are the aesthetic privacy walls.

My local Costco has banned me from returning these after returning 6 of them over a 3 year period :-(

I highly recommend a soaker hose and timer to ensure success with these once you plant them, will eliminate the need to return

I looked into the emerald green arborvitae myself last year, but after talking with a neighbor the deer apparently enjoy arborvitae. So they were a no go for me, as the deer ruin everything here.

I might have to give these Thuja a go.

These things get to be huge, so make sure to space them properly. I planted a bunch around my yard about 5 years ago and even with reading how big they get prior, they still seem larger than I thought they would be and they haven't begun to reach how big they will actually get. I probably would have spaced them further apart. My 1st batch was 1-2 foot ones like the ones in this OP and they are harder to establish than the ones I got even just a bit bigger the next year.

I used something like this [lowes.com](with extensions) to make it easier for me to water

Honestly, I would ban you too lol. I hate people like this that ruin it for all the other Costco members. Been a member since 1997 never having once been banned because I don't do dumb things like return things that are clearly my mistske

Seems like you failed to read the last part of my post on rectifying my error, How has telling strangers on the internet what to do or not do worked out for you so far. Have a great day
Are you being intentionally obtuse? It's nice that you're helping others avoid the mistakes you made but you literally admitted to abusing the return policy by returning them when you ruined them with poor care.

Telling others what to do has worked out well for myself as well as the recipient of my correction. I'm not going to hold my breath for you though, based on the tone of your replies.

I hope your day is as pleasant as you are!

Not sure where u are from but our local nurseries have deer resistant arbs. We have at least 40 arbs. neighbors have even more . We both have 2 acres with woods next to us. Consistently have 15-25 deer in our backyard . Arbs have never been touched . Hostas on the other hand get demolished no matter what tricks /products we try

Do you mean 6 of the 8 pack of plants?

Or 6 plants of one 8pack died?

I haven't heard Costco cracking down on returns by type, so just curious.

Thanks.
