The concern is with pests that hitch a ride on the plants across state lines. California has significant agricultural exports: Grapes — $5.23 billion, Almonds — $5.03 billion, so laws don't allow shipping plants in from out of state.

You know it's funny, people really don't realize how those laws in California have changed products all over the country to be made of safer materials. A lot of manufacturers don't want to put those labels on their products in California, so they reformulate so they don't have to. This actually improves the quality across the country of those products.

Anyway I get the joke. But I really do wonder if people appreciate the reality.

Yes they are toxic to pets, but my animals don't really chew on the leaves. Now I have it outside in my patio because it really need some "bright indirect light" and it was not doing well in the living room...But I got my FLF from Costa Farms on amazon last year in July, it was like 30" tall. Now it is 6ft. I didn't really chip off the leaves on the bottom because I know if I don't like the look they will never grow back. lol.

Yes, maybe safer but also more expensive. They're two sides to each coin. Not saying it's bad but it's not free either. And wealthy states like California it's easy to take a small price increase in states with less wealth, it's quite painful.

These things grow very easily, and get large very quickly. We have a couple, and they easily grow 2ft taller each year with plentiful leaves. Don't do much to care for them other than water and sun. We love them!
Disclaimer - they only grow well in humid/semi-humid and warm environments. They can't tolerate even a little cold or dry climates.

It's a little more nuanced than that.
"At its best, Prop 65 has resulted in changes in product formulation to remove or reduce potentially harmful chemicals, including in things like Wite-out and herbicides. Awareness raised by Prop 65 led Coke to change its use of 4-MEI, a potential carcinogen found in some caramel coloring."

Your article reiterates almost the exact same thing as the one I posted. It's about the volume of Prop 65 warnings and that it's mostly become a CYA measure. Note all the waffle words in your own quote: "at its best," "potentially harmful," "potential carcinogen." FDA says there's no reason to believe 4-MEI is harmful to your health and notes that the studies used rodents with exposure exceeding normal exposure from food with or without caramel coloring...but Coke removed it anyway to avoid a lawsuit. No one is arguing that reducing carcinogens is a bad thing but you can only cry wolf on 100 million consumer goods before people stop caring, and that's where Prop 65 goes wrong.

I agree it's overboard. But then again, it has altered the manufacturing practices of some firms to avoid the label. I agree that the standard is likely too tight.

I live in California and have ordered plants on Amazon that ship to my door. In reading more into it, the company has to be certified to ship to California. To your point likely due to regulations around pests.

Wonder what the rate of air purification is. Feels like I need a whole room full of these to do any real work.

This is 100% correct. We've had the same experience. As far as pets are concerned, my dog shows absolutely zero interest in ours.

Home Depot has them cheap as well and the best thing about picking them up if you can actually pick the one that you want many of them have three smaller ones part of the plant and they'll never turn into a tree

So in order to save money your states should have products that contribute to cancer?

Nice take.

Mine did that too. The trunk still looked green so I watered it once a week. Two weeks later, new leaves from the top! It looks awkward, but so far three leaves in less than a month! Hopefully keeps going and eventually doesn't look weird.

Did you move the plant by any chance? I heard they don't like change. We moved a few months earlier and it was probably just catching up.
I didn't move it but I checked this morning and new green!

They should call these Fickle Leaf Figs. I watch this youtuber, Plants with Krystal, and given her expertise with indoor plants and struggle with the fiddle leaf fig in Indiana, I most certainly will not be trying it in Colorado.
