Another reason for cellular versions is that the LTE versions have GPS built in if your using it for maps. That's useful even if you never pick a data plan.

If using your hotspot works stick with it. However, some may want to be on a different network for whatever reason. Also the antennae on the iPad is larger than any phone's, so reception especially for data use will be better. It's all about options.

Because using your phone as a hot spot uses a lot of power. A 12.9 iPad Pro has a much bigger battery.

Also depending on someone's data plan, if you only need a cellular once in a while, like on vacation, you may be better off having a cel phone plan with a lower data plan, then just get a temp data plan for the iPad when your on vacation.cancel it when your done. This allows you to have two different cellular providers.

Can you not just use your phone as a hot spot?

That's what I've always done. Some people don't have that capability for whatever reason.

I bought a 2nd-gen iPad Pro (12.9") with cellular and have not used the cellular a single time... I don't think I've ever had a need to use an iPad where I didn't have wifi. Worst case, I could use my phone as a hotspot.

Also want to say, for those that have never owned one of these, these things are amazing. While I do want to refresh to the latest, I just can't justify it because my iPad is still runs flawlessly with everything I throw at it, 6 years later...

As others have said, HotSpot consumes a decent amount of power.

-What about people who use these devices for work? Whether working for a company, or working for themselves (an appraiser, or merchant, or similar).

-And what if you're traveling, and you want the option to use a SIM or eSIM in another country for the duration of your trip?

-What about people who have the disposable income and just want the convenience?

All good, sometimes it's hard to think of use cases that we've never experienced or had a need for. In my case, I'll probably go with a cellular version so that when we do travel, I have the option of getting an eSIM in whatever country we're in. No way I'll have a continuous plan for it while at home, I would have zero real need for that. Waste of money.

Aren't they amazing?? I have the first one, bought on release day. Zero regrets, what an amazing device. An iPad Pro 12.9", A1584. With a miserable 32GB of storage!!! Which is why this time I think I'll go for 512GB honestly. This thing has started to get a bit slow with iOS 16 and 16.x beta versions. It's still fine for displaying things, like a PDF while working on the car, things like that... But it's not nearly as performant, after ~6-7 years, which is to be expected.

My hot spot cuts out all the time after a few minutes idle. Also it always says low data mode when I sync up with my phones hot spot. It's too spotty (no pun)

Haha... yeeeeeah dude, original battery LOL! Coconut Battery screenshot attached. 32GB, what a major pain in the ass. Back then, I didn't make as much. I used money I saved up from doing software testing jobs to buy it. Totally worth it, no regret from buying the device. Definitely regretted buying the 32GB!! Not that I every used it in a way where I needed storage honestly. I have used it for movies, for reading in bed, for watching streaming content (e.g. Formula 1 races), while traveling, etc. But yeah I'll be going for 1TB I'm pretty sure this time, f*ck that. Torn between 512GB M2 WiFi only, versus 1TB M1 WiFi + LTE only. 1st world problem.

Given its age, if the battery is at a very low % (or dead), I charge it with the 5W charger. Just to charge it slowly and keep the temps down (overnight, for example). If it's at ~70% or some higher percentage, I'll use the 30W or 87W USB-C.

I got the same one that I got from work that I use for light browsing Smilie Runs pretty decently on iPadOS 15. My main one is a 11" M1.
