It's not that simple. You're right that the 980 Pro has better performance and in some synthetic tests it's going to look way faster, but for most practical applications users won't notice much of a difference.

If the most storage intensive thing you do with your computer is boot to Windows or play games, then you can go cheap on your SSD. If copying 50+ GB files is something that you do regularly, then you probably want to spend more on storage performance and write endurance.

This is like recommending a grandma a Ferrari so she can go to grocery store down the road faster . That 2x performance you talking about is irrelevant in 90% of time

M.2 sata is now a niche product, vast majority of M.2 is now NVMe. It's hard to find stock of the 860 EVO, let alone a sale.

The Crucial P3 PLUS is a better deal at $54 for 1TB and $113 for 2TB and $225 for 4TB (posted in many other threads on SD)

Plus its Gen-4 PCIe NVME drive meaning it will run faster than the Gen-3 system on the PC. Your PC will limit the speeds to ~4000 MB/s

I'm using it as a storage drive on my Legion 5 Pro {16ACH6H - 2022} which is a Gen-3 PCIe bus

Will this work for PS5 expansion? I know PS5 expansion calls for Gen 4, but curious if this gen 3 will work?

No only gen 4 will be accepted. It's only a few bucks more. Just get the faster drive.

Hmm, I'd say spend the extra $20 and get the 1TB 980 Pro also on FP. Almost 2X faster than this, provided you have a PCI-e 4.0 mobo.

What would be a good enclosure case for this? Any particular one I should look for if I want to use it in a car.

I really hope I'm right about this:

SABRENT USB 3.2 10Gbps Type C Tool Free Enclosure for M.2 PCIe NVMe and SATA SSDs (EC-SNVE) https://a.co/d/60eORu7

From the research I did, without going up to those 40Gbps $100 units this seems to be the best bang for the buck. Using brands I've heard of only, I just have zero faith in the mismash Chinese words brands I see.

Edit: I say I hope I'm right because unless told otherwise I'm using this.

Using in a Mac mini M2 as permanent external storage.
