The S20 Ultra suffered from focusing & camera lag issues. these were significantly improved, but not 100% fixed, via software updates. They just got One UI 5.1 atop Android 13 which will be their last significant software update. They will get security updates for at least one more year. I have used a couple of older Samsung devices with OneUI 5.0 and 5.1 and they are quite smooth so these devices should be going out in good shape software-wise.

Also worth noting is that the S20 Ultra has a massive 5k mAh battery which is the same as the S22 & S23 Ultra. The S20 Ultra has a 6.9" screen which is the largest ever on a Samsung device alongside the Note 20 Ultra. The S20+ has a 6.7" screen which is a smidge larger than the current S23/S22+.

These are the final Galaxy S models to support microSD expansion and the first to support 45W Wired charging. Also the final Galaxy S models to support Samsung Pay MST (the Note 20 Ultra being the final one to support those features). Finally, although the hardware supports it, there were some behind the scenes shenanigans and these devices never received 5G midband support on any carrier. Apple's iPhone 12 has the same 5G qualcomm chipset and got updated to support those frequencies in addition to mmwave and low-band. So you won't see "UWB" very much on these devices, if ever. I had a Note 20 for 18 months so I know. When I upgraded from a Note 20 Ultra to the S22 Ultra I got mid-band support and a significantly improved 5G experience.

I would have no issues buying one of these for a 1 year "rental" or as a wi-fi based device to fiddle with or as a kids' phone. Compared to, say, a comparably priced Moto G budget handset, these will run circles around it in camera & SoC performance and especially screen quality. You'll also get wireless charging and significantly faster wired charging IF you use a proper PPS PD charger.

You can get these phones in excellent condition renewed on Amazon pretty much at any point and time. I just got an S10 for 169 that was PERFECT with a 96% battery.

If this was the 512GB version, I would be more inclined to buy. Also the plug looks like it is the international version. It might not get the proper 5G or samsung wallet here in the US. That ans it is bronze. Haha
Why? Over $500 for that is a terrible deal (you can get an s22 ultra which has a vastly superior chip, battery life, and camera for $600 or therabouts if you're watching). Only thing the note 20 ultra has is slightly better speakers (23 ultra fixes that), tiny bit taller screen and an SD card slot.

How many more years left will Samsung support updates for this model?
Samsung supports these with 3 versions of Android (so basically 3 years) then security patches for another 1 or 2 years (4 or 5 total years) depending on model.

Where is the deal? These are used and 3+ years old. I'm out the door with a new pixel 7 directly from Google for $145. Buy, trade, and repeat every 2 years.

Yeah that sd card slot does make it that much more worth it. I guess when they have 1.5TB phones, then I'll upgrade. The s23 ultra 1TB is tempting at $1.1K, but if I am to keep my phones for 3 years, I would definitely need that 1.5TB of space to hold me over for 3 years.

Cmon...Apple has amazing marketing. They convince all the soy boys to spend 1200.00 for a new inferior phone every 2 years.

1440p60fps, 4k60fps and 4k120fps videos. And occasionally 8k30fps videos but those are too big to be worth it on my phone's screen. The others are pictures, but those don't take a lot of space. I find even with my 1TB microsd card, I see myself filtering and only keep certain videos on there.

You should be using cloud or a dedicated camera if you want to keep that many high resolution videos. If you can afford a 1k phone then you can afford 8 dollars per month for cloud. It's atypical to need instant access to that many videos of that size outside of specific fields of work, and you would be using a dedicated tool and not a phone.

I am tempted by the S20 Ultra, but I haven't bought from Woot in ages. What's the likelihood of getting a decent (cosmetically and operationally) phone? And what would be the process of returning it if not satisfied?

Thank you.
In my experience, it is more hit than miss, but miss is definitely a possibility.
Returns are easy through Amazon.

Only the lower end Samsung's in the US get the Exynos. International gets Exynos in the flagships.

I have bought a few and every one appeared in new condition. I have not had the need to return.
