I had no idea that a sweeping seconds hand was the defining feature of a mechanical watch for so many people. Or maybe I should say justifying feature because the discussion here seems to about whether it's even worth having a mechanical watch if it doesn't have that smooth sweeping seconds hand.

I enjoy my automatic and handwind watches because they engage me in a way that a quartz watch can't. It's mechanical nature, the need to wind it when the power reserve runs down. Setting the time, etc. That level of interaction connects me to a very traditional form of personal technology. I liken it to a sailboat versus a powerboat. Either will get you from point A to point B, but with the sailboat you need to raise and trim sails, tack in relation to wind direction, shift your weight when the craft heels over in a fresh breeze.

A sailboat looks pretty when it's underway; and you sure won't mistake it for a power boat. But that's not why I sail.

If anyone happens to purchase this watch use the coupon code: SPRING7 right on the site; it will take off about $25 off the price compares to coupon code: ASHGM359. I was about to buy this watch as it is as thin as my Longines dress watch which is kinda rare for an automatic but it was a no buy since it did not have the seconds sweep just like PNUCKLE mentioned.

It might as well be quartz w/ no seconds sweep. I don't understand who wants an automatic watch without seeing it sweep.
Absolutely right. An automatic watch should definitely have a second hand.

I think omitting the second hand was a design decision to allow the watch to be thinner. Thinness being the claim to fame for this Hamilton model.

Yep, this guy gets it. Removing the second hand allows it to be significantly thinner. If that's a dealbreaker, then this just isn't the watch for you.
I, personally, think its a great looking daily driver.

How many times have any of you used the seconds hands on a non-chronograph watch? It's virtually pointless

I "USE" the seconds hand every time I look at any of my mechanical watches. I don't prefer chrono's for this same exact issue as the seconds hand is on smaller dial and isn't as noticeable as a full size seconds sweep. There is nothing my phone can't do better than a mechanical watch and enjoy watching the seconds sweep as much as I like looking at the dials. I finally splurged this year on a 79230B BB Heritage and landed on it because of the snowflake hands and no date function. If it didn't have a seconds sweep, I would not have purchased it period.

Hamilton was a good brand but Swatch has diluted it in recent years. Even the case that comes with this watch looks cheap and "sporty" for a watch that's not meant to be a sports watch

i bought this last Nov, I'm disappointed even though this is a good looking watch. the battery doesn't last for even a day if you stop wearing it. if you forget to put the watch on in the morning, by noon it would sometimes run out of battery. By the time I had the watch band adjusted for my wirst, it had already passed the return period so now I'm stuck with a watch that doesn't hold the charge. I know have to manually wind the watch each night just in case, which is annoying.

I'm pretty disappointed and would not recommend this watch.

It is a mechanical watch. But usually it would keep time for more than 24 hours.

The other ones I have hold charge for about 3 days. At least 2.

Exactly. Also, how many times have people who own a chronograph actually use the chronograph? It's all for show.

See "Thinline." The lack of a seconds hand fits with traditional dress watches, where simplicity and thinness control over all else.

I have this in anthracite. Love it.

Are you plugging it into the right outlet?

soul...longevity...craftsmanship...heritage. The difference between mechanical and quartz is hard to quantify, but if you think a mechanical movement's only purpose is just to make a neat trick with the seconds hand, you're in the vast minority of watch enthusiasts.
Not at all. The point of a seconds hand (preferably hacking) is to gauge the accuracy of your new (or new to you) auto/mech watch. Half the joy of the hobby is pride when it's keeping really close time or stressing if it's much out of specs and trying to finesse it to perform better or having it regulated. Obviously it's never going to keep time like a half decent quartz but you knew that going in.
