Agree 100%. Spend the $4 more and get the 8 port. You're going to use 3 ports of a 5 port switch right out of the box. Spend the $4 more to get 3 more ports.

Do these things just die regularly? My TP-Link 8 port died after 3 years, my Netgear GS308 died after 6 months. To be fair its the one device I don't have plugged into a UPS because it sits inside my structured wiring panel, maybe that's on me?

Yes they do seem to die after a few years. The cheap power supply or an internal cap goes bad. It's not worth repairing. Just replace the unit.

3 years seems reasonable, but 6 months is a bit short. Is it hot where you keep them?

I bought 2 TRENDnet switches in mid-2017, an 8 port and a 5 port. Both still going strong almost 6yrs later running 24/7/365.

Maybe a bit hotter than the rest of the house, it's in a panel in the wall in the laundry room. I have a new one I ordered last week coming. If that doesn't last I'll probably make some changes. Fortunately they are kind of cheap.

Buy a Netgear "ProSAFE" switch, it has a lifetime warranty on the hardware ... it will cost you more but they are worth the money.

With one port for uplink this is capable of connecting only four devices. As other have said an 8 port switch is far more versatile.

Agreed 8 port is way to go unless size is a concern. I was surprised my last Trendnet 8-port lasted 10 years, bought TP-Link TL-SG108 instead with lifetime warranty. Figured the metal chassis may help in heat dispersion.

They should last a least several years, unless they stay really hot. Things are made cheaply nowadays though. 3 years might be the max. I still have some 10/100 switches that are still going strong, and even an ancient rare 10 Mb/s hub that still hums, though slowly!

I have never had any switch of any brand fail on me. And I have quite a collection (10+?)
