Slappa da bass.
The one I own plays very nicely for the price. I recommend it.
Bass requires bass amp.

Guitar can use either amp. But won't sound as "good" on bass amp.

For beginners I would say get the cheapest bass amp or a pedal that outputs to headphones ($50 target for either amp or pedal).

Edit: you can play bass on a guitar amp … before someone tries to argue I don't want to argue. But the chances of damaging the speaker are significant. It won't explode or catch on fire.

Picked one of these up as my first bass a month ago and love the look and feel. Great deal for a beginner.

I bought the rosewood fretboard version when it was posted a few months ago for the same price and I love it! I plays very nice. I'm tempting to buy this one to have a maple fretboard bass, as all my other bases have rosewood fretboards.

Hey bass players, newbie bass question…can one use a guitar amp with a bass or is a bass amp required (that is, can a guitar amp be good enough for playing around and maybe a little home recording?

If you have a tube guitar amp, I've been told not to use it for bass at all - not sure on the specifics. If using a solid state amp, the speaker is still a worry as it's not designed to play those low frequencies, but you should be able to play at low volume. If you use a solid state and output to headphones/bypass the speaker entirely, then it shouldn't be an issue.

There are amps that are designed for both. I needed a bass amp and a better guitar amp recently so I picked up a Spark Positive Grid. Fantastic little practice amp with a bundled app that adds a ton of cool features. And you can also use it as a fairly high end bluetooth speaker.

For both high-quality home recording and hearing your bass for less than $100 (assuming you have a computer / laptop)… just search for "audio interface" on Amazon or Sweetwater Music or FB. It's a small USB box that lets you hear and record your bass into a program like GarageBand. The Scarlett 2i2 is a very popular interface and I got one in great condition on FB Marketplace a couple years ago for around $70 (and tax free). Need a good cheap Mac to run GarageBand? MacSales.com sells older pro-refurbished MBPs for as low as $129. Hope that helps someone!

Small correction: if you bought one made in the last 5 years, then the fretboard is jatoba, not rosewood.

It's definitely best to use a bass cab, but you can play bass through a guitar cab, and it's totally safe if done correctly. Consider that F# on an 8-string guitar is about 46Hz while the E on a 4-string bass is about 41Hz. Also consider though that not every guitar amp is really up to the task of handling an 8-string guitar well, so it's a conditional, "Yes, you can."

Bass cabs tend to have much larger cab volumes to move more air required for low notes. Bass cabs also tend to be ported to produce louder volumes at whatever tuning the port is. With that said, I've played bass through big 1x12" and 4×12" guitar cabs. You lose a ton of low end response, and you actually have to turn down the bass knob to keep the sound within the capabilities of the guitar cab speaker, but it is possible.

So, it's highly recommended to just shell out $200 on a used bass combo, but if you have a big metal guitar cabinet, you could make due for a while.

I think you got your answer on amps, but FWIW, I've been playing bass exclusively through a keyboard/acoustic amp (Peavey KB/A 300) for years. Got it off Craigslist from a crappy punk band for like $100. Might be another used option to look out for.

Whenever I test these out at guitar center the stacked knobs are always busted. Seems like they're prone to failure. Also the neck is super chunky but some people like that. The bass does sound good.
