I have my plex server on my qnap and I'm very happy with it. There's a google sheet that plex users share that shows you which NAS to get: https://docs.google.com/spreadshe...1274624273

FYI, Linkstation 220 was released in 2014, and I highly doubt it has any recent updates from the Buffalo. Besides, the hardware specs are somewhat outdated (3Gbps SATA, for example).

I own a similar Buffalo Linkstation 421 which I bought diskless 10+ years ago - it uses *nix (OpenBSD?) with the software RAID in the backend. I was able to hack in and open SSH port with root access. I still use it for backups.

If I were shopping today - I would consider either Synology or QNAP.

Thanks, picking one up today! I've been looking for an inexpensive NAS that plays nicely with Macs for my music. This is the first deal I've shown my tech-savvy spouse that got his approval.

Could anyone comment on the software Buffalo uses with their NAS? I have been using TerraMaster and it is horrrible. I'm waiting for a good deal on Synology, but those seem lacking and wondering how this one is. For example, can you use Plex wiith it?

Buffalo NAS OS is plain from my experience, probably the same as your TerraMaster. It didn't have any useful app and definitely no Plex.

Plex and NAS in general doesn't work well because of the transcoding according to the Plex site. I can say from experience I moved my plex server off my Synology because the experience was less than stellar. https://support.plex.tv/articles/...mitations/

I've heard the Nvidia ShieldTV Pro is a great option. I don't believe there are any limitations with it vs a dedicated plex server but i would look into that to confirm, or maybe someone here has experience with it

The limitation is the storage space for the Plex database can be rather small if you're using the Shield as an Amazon TV too.

Could one easily gain root access to these Buffalo NAS devices? I have an older model and I can get root access it and in doing so makes it very easy to do various administrative and customized tasks.

There is a tool called "ACP Commander", that used to let you take the control over Buffalo NAS. I don't know though it they closed this loophole in the recent versions or not.

LS 220 is very low end in terms of horsepower - 800 mhz and 256 mb ram. The lowest end dual bay Synology, the DS220j, has a 1.6 ghz arm and 512 mb ram, and goes around $135 on sale.

Can't find much on the 720. It has a hex core CPU but no info on which cpu.
