My kids (11, 9, 7yrs & possibly for the 5 & 3 yrs) are asking for walkie talkies. Are these pretty good for the money? Should I maybe spend a bit more for something better for the older kids? Also noticed they have some rechargeable options as well.

if you use your own rechargable batteries in general you don't need to worry about buying rechargable units.
you can buy many sets of these or you can buy different models and they will all work together on the same channel as they mostly all have a "one-to-one AND one-to-more communication capability the latter or which will allow many units to operate together on the same channel, same model or not.
always be aware that strangers and even predators (ham radio "enthusiast" weird/bitter lone wolf old men types) are listening in on everything said on these and know that your kids are also close by since the range of these is probably only a few miles at best. there is no way around this except to be proactively aware of it. some of these types of people don't just passively listen, they record everything. teach your kids not to freely give out personal info like last names or addresses or explicit/detailed locations of any kind while using them.
