The keychain holder isn't really for the situation of theft. It is more for losing your keys, etc. Also, the airtag isn't wrapped in metal so I doubt the ring will have any noticeable affect on range.

For keys of course but I see these attached to backpacks, purses, camera cases, laptop bags etc all the time. Makes zero sense in that circumstance. I was traveling last few weeks and I could have easily created a collection of airtags hanging from the bags of people I was standing in line behind at airports and bus stations.
And yes, I agree that the metal will not harm the RF signal's range but I could see someone claiming "iT iNcReAsEs RaNgE" being outside of the bag. I was simply replying to that silliness before it was stated.

If theft is a concern don't these tags basically scream "throw me away so the owner can't find me?" And arguably range would be decreased by these tags (as opposed to placing in a outside pocket) as the metal buttons, rings, etc are far more disturbing to TM signals than a layer of fabric.
Might as well install a LoJack in your car secured to the passenger seat with velcro....oh and sticky note that says "please do not remove."
Note: I am not talking about AirTags being used on keyrings but backpacks, purses, laptop bags, and whatnot.
The marketing does seem flawed in that regard, when targeting the security/theft demographic. I have one hidden in my car and another hidden in my bike. You could also hide one in your robot lawnmower, for example. The key here is that you're hiding the AirTag to prevent the "snatch and throw away the tracker" move.
However, imagine having a kid (or multiple), and you throw an AirTag on their backpack and now can track where they are.
I still wouldn't hang it on the outside of the backpack like that, though. I might even secretly stitch it into the corner of a pocket somewhere. Just because that kid's backpack could easily be stolen.
So, this example I just shared is kinda a silly explanation because under what circumstances would you want to track the location of something while ALSO not caring about whether or not it's stolen?
AirTags are useful tracking devices. Attaching it in plain sight to whatever you want to track seems silly.

That's the point. Why market the keychain holder on non/keychain items like a backpack or purse? It's a marketing time not understanding the limitations of the use cases, or just blatantly preying on consumer ignorance.

Another one of those, you get what you pay for. I got these but after a month or 2 the start to fall apart. They are exactly $1 worth, let alone $10. So no deal actually. Try to get some quality one after all you dont want loose $25 worth of airtag a piece. I myself am looking for one which is more durable.

You are thinking it wrong. The AirTag is not an anti theft device. It's a device to track your belonging in case of loss, not theft. If your intent is to track the device in case of theft, then you would obviously not use one of these holders. You could just hide it. This is common sense.

Best to buy one with solid back to avoid playing hide and seek with airtag
