Here's why:
1.) They're only smokeless when they get to a full blaze. They're even smokier than a normal fire during setup.
2.) They burn through wood almost twice as fast as a normal fire pit. Fine if you live rural and buy wood by the cord but expensive if you live in an urban or suburban neighborhood.
3.) The tall sides direct 80%+ of the heat directly upward, so you have to stand next to the fire pit to feel it. If you try to sit next to one of these fires you're gonna be cold.
4.) You can't create "zones" and scoop coals into an area for cooking over. These pits are either at full blast or need to be completely doused. No real middle ground.
Does anybody know of any good deals on plain old regular metal fire pits/bowls that are actually built to last?
That said, using it deliberately as an incinerator to dispose of yard waste worked pretty good.
Update : my conclusion after trying one was they're not for me.

Any tips on making your own deflector? I have the ranger with the cooktop. Agree that solostove is probably overpriced but for the many open campfires I've made having a smoke less fire is better than full smoke flying in your face. Especially in my area where wind direction changes every few minutes. I'm not moving around every time. Too old for that!!
Got the tiki smokeless - hotter than solo bonfire for group of 6 easy… came with stand and cover on sale for less than 300 all the time https://www.tikibrand.c

Sell me your smokeless pit 😁. Don't care too much about the radiant heat as it's not that cold in Texas.

If you add up all the $50-100 el-cheapo pits I've bought over the years and had rust out or break, this pays for itself in 5-6 years easy.
there is currently a coupon for it on the site that drops the price down to about $120 (the BonFire version)

what you said is true. but to add my comments to yours.
1- They are not smokeless. but it is WAY less smoke than a normal firepit. and that is the main selling point. I don't think they are smokier. may be less or same. but its the nature of what material you are burning.
2- they do burn through wood fast but they burn the wood all the way. cheaper firewood you burn less but struggle to get the entire wood piece to burn without constanly attending to it. and the buring area is enclosed so you don't have to constantly worry about wind blowing th wrong direction and your flame being impacted. Thes smokeless pits burn wet wood way better than normal firepit where it will just sit there and smoke out. the solo stove I have dries it it fast and burn it up once you have the fire started.
3- True one of my complaints and what I noticed too but you can build a heat deflector shield.
I think for this specific model you can get a long brick stand it up and put a 16" pizza pan on top and it will be a good heat deflector.
4 - true. it is harder to cook on it but it is possible. just not as verstitle as you said. with that said the other ceaper firepits I seen don't even offer the round top surface to cook easily.
These are sepcifically design for reduced smoke there are some disadvanage to it and pro. its what you want to prioritize.
Dragonfire Universal Stainless Steel Spark Screen. This fits solo stove bonfire.
