Here's why:
1.) They're only smokeless when they get to a full blaze. They're even smokier than a normal fire during setup.
2.) They burn through wood almost twice as fast as a normal fire pit. Fine if you live rural and buy wood by the cord but expensive if you live in an urban or suburban neighborhood.
3.) The tall sides direct 80%+ of the heat directly upward, so you have to stand next to the fire pit to feel it. If you try to sit next to one of these fires you're gonna be cold.
4.) You can't create "zones" and scoop coals into an area for cooking over. These pits are either at full blast or need to be completely doused. No real middle ground.
Does anybody know of any good deals on plain old regular metal fire pits/bowls that are actually built to last?
That said, using it deliberately as an incinerator to dispose of yard waste worked pretty good.
Update : my conclusion after trying one was they're not for me.

I've been curious about one of these so I borrowed my neighbor's SoloStove to see how I'd like it. And yes, these things act like incinerators eating wood like mad. If you've got land and are chopping your own wood then great, but if you're in the suburbs buying bundles from the store then you might be surprised how much you end up spending on wood to keep these fed. They'll gobble up a single bundle in a few minutes.

Great points! Solo stove makes a deflector shield which solves the heat issue but they want way too much money for it. Need to find a slickdeal, I'm too lazy to make my own.
Hang on, loading my washing machine with wood. Do I start the fire before or after the rinse cycle

Find an old washing machine and pull the drum from it. Best fire pit you can get. It will last a lifetime+.
