Might be a fluke but I bought this the last time it was posted, less than a month ago, and one side was not working. Returned it. Otherwise, it was definitely a cool toy.

Bought one earlier this month. It's broken after about 10 minutes of geriatric-level use. JUNK

Junk it sounds like. Maybe I'd take a stab at $7

If it's frequently returned, maybe we're just buying the same batch over and over?

I wish you buy but after seeing amazons note frequently return item — big NO. Amazon capturing returns by user id so watchful when buy/returns

I got this last time for my 3.5 year old. There are 2 motors, one on each side. And a very small gear on the motor that connects to 2 gears, which also connect to 2 gears which are attached to each wheel. The little gear on the motor has popped off on both sides multiple times. It takes 3 minutes to fix. Just need a small screw driver, you pop the wheels off. Then 6 more bolts behind each wheel to release the side cover, pop the side cover off and reattach the small gear in the very center of the track. Then make sure everything else is fit and rebuild it. You could probably put a dab of glue in the gear when you slide it over the axle and it wouldn't happen again.

Should you have to do this? No. But for a $15 toy that my kid has already gotten like 10 hours of play time out of, I'll spend 3 minutes of maintenance to fix it back up.

Ok I have a 6 year old who has been obsessed with RC cars his whole life, so we have tried and been given many RC cars. Some have annoying battery/rechargable slots, many break in one way or another within the first few hours of play.

This RC car is above average in terms of survivability, and the kids love crashing it into walls and spinning it in circles.

I'd suggest the two best rc cars for younger kids are:
Megalodon Storm RC - waterproof, pretty much indestructible, rechargable (we've had one for over 2 years and it's still going strong)
Ramp Champ Grave Digger soft tires (this one is a great all-arounder, one of the better at handling ramps and the soft tires make it good to drive inside the house. Also has a very easy charger)

Have fun out there RC fans!

My son has one. It regularly breaks. Inside each side, the main gear that spins both wheels becomes dislodged. You can open it up and slide the gear back down for full functionality again. It's just a design flaw for the main gear to slip out of place. But it's also not a difficult fix.

I haven't checked that. It definitely isn't accessible without tearing it apart some. But in the process of removing the wheels and side housing, I haven't seen a way to get to the battery, so most likely it is hidden under the main body housing.
