FYI, Lowe's should put their 'Premium Mulch" on sale for $2 tomorrow, according to thispost
In my experience, they are comparable, but somebody else may feel strongly about one or the other

Interesting.
Just tried a bunch of Zip codes and looks like it's Melbourne FL and South to Mami as well as west to Ft Myers and south. Confused

They are the same company, What you need to do is look on the back side and see if there is white mold on the mulch. A lot of these bags have white mold and random bits of rubber, rocks and stuff that is not mulch. Its average quality. The scotts brand costs more but seems to be higher quality.

Newbie here - what can you do with moldy mulch? Can you use it somewhere or just return them? TIA

Colored mulch is usually made from the lowest quality wood because the dyes help hide the composition of the wood. Often this means cheap SPF pallets with plenty of garbage mix-ins, like you mentioned.

Also, check on the bag what the dye is. Best case scenarios are that the black is carbon black (a petroleum byproduct), the red is iron oxide, and the brown is diethylene glycol monobutyl ether. Often times the cheaper colored mulches are dyed with worse stuff than those.

I'm fairly certain the reference to mold is actually fungus and it will/should be present on all wooden mulch eventually. There would be no cause for concern, it's just nature breaking down the wood.
