They are the same company, What you need to do is look on the back side and see if there is white mold on the mulch. A lot of these bags have white mold and random bits of rubber, rocks and stuff that is not mulch. Its average quality. The scotts brand costs more but seems to be higher quality.
uh...buying 50 bags. No way I'm sorting through a pallet checking each one for a bit of mold or a couple rocks. On top of that, the workers are going to load them. Well worth a $10 tip. (my kids will unload at home. No tip needed- I feed them).

Ouch, no discounts on cedar mulch it looks like. I prefer to use it up against the house for fear of pests and it smells nice.

I never see the cedar mulch on sale. It's the only one I'll use. I'm not a fan of the dyes or the smell of the colored mulches.

In Texas Home Depot does have a $2 bag sale right now on Texas Native hardwood mulch, it only comes in a dark brown color.

Colored mulch is usually made from the lowest quality wood because the dyes help hide the composition of the wood. Often this means cheap SPF pallets with plenty of garbage mix-ins, like you mentioned.

Also, check on the bag what the dye is. Best case scenarios are that the black is carbon black (a petroleum byproduct), the red is iron oxide, and the brown is diethylene glycol monobutyl ether. Often times the cheaper colored mulches are dyed with worse stuff than those.
Right!? I don't get why people eat this stuff up, it bleeds out and into your yard and eventually the ground water. I grow too much food in the ground to be messing with extra unnecessary crud like colored mulch that's gonna bleed out into the soil.

Unless I got a bad batch last year, this brand from HD was very fine and crumbly. Almost like wood plane shavings. I prefer the brand and lowes, last a lot longer too

I buy about 100 bags of mulch a year. Never had mold once. Maybe lucky. Maybe area I live. I personally think the claims are exaggerated.
at that point it's way cheaper to get a dump truck or fresh mulch delivered

This brand of mulch NOT good for smoking. Stick to diy if that is what you use it for.

I got a bad batch this year. Didn't have patience to go back and return 50 bags.
