Nice find op. Wish there was a similar deal on a Blu-ray player.

Back in 1996, I paid $350 for an external 4x SCSI CD burner, so this seems like a great deal!

People with Crappy internet do, plus most Blu Ray players upscale the discs to make them look better on HDTVs, and some of the newest players even have AI Upscaling to make them look almost Blu Ray quality on a 4KTV.

Its certainly not modern, nor does anyone claim it is, but when you need a optical drive...there is no workaround.

Bonus points for being about the cheapest (to the point of being disposable) way to share / backup data.

Same! Next buy would be one of those Bluray burners that will burn the 100GB M-Disc for long term archiving. But every one of those are $100+.

Occasionally I back up my work files onto DVD and put them in my safe as an additional backup.

Agreed. I was pointing out a pattern that exists around here that 'modern' is considered some kind of panacea.

On top of that, 100GB M-Disc is $12+ a piece unless you buy in bulk (even so it's close to $10), which makes it more expensive than SSD today (not that they're comparable in longevity, but just a reference point).

Speaking of which, I should go do some backup of photos onto those discs. That would take a while...
