That answer is only partially true. The real answer is it depends on your system. There are modern systems that can self adjust the air flow rate to accommodate higher merv filters. However, if you're unsure what system you have, the safest bet is to go with a lower merv.
Hopefully these don't collapse. I once bought a batch at Home Depot, and it was horrible, several of them folded leaving open gaps.
Never. The higher the merv rating also the harder it makes your system works. You just buy the cheaper merv rating 2-3 and replace money without ruining your system

I use something like this on my 3 air intakes which feeds my gas furnace and AC
But....... the air goes through a MERV 16 24x24x5" filter right before it goes into the furnace.
These thin/cheapo units keep out the dander, the dogs fur, and other chunky stuff from the MERV16 filter.
Replace the cheapo pre-filters every 3-4 months, the main MERV16 once a year.
Been in use for years.... the airways to the MERV16 are near spotless. After the MERV16, easily could pass a white glove inspection. AC Coils look new.
Hi all. I somehow received an extra $33.36 off (when I changed from store pickup to free shipping) for a total of $49.92. It said the extra $33.36 was from "categorylevelspendxg". Any idea what that is? Thanks!
There is balance to be achieved. Something with a rating this low is going to let tons of particulates through, which will eventually foul your A-Coil with dust, hurt your AC efficiency, encourage it to ice over more easily, and require it to be cleaned. Use whatever is recommended by the manufacturer, the whole idea is to not create excessive resistance to airflow, but whatever MFG's recommend, it almost certainly is much, much higher than MERV 2.
Actually, for systems with combined A/C coil & gas furnace the residual dust drops out on the furnace elements which sit first in the path of the returned air, and does not get to the AC coil. First time in the season the heater air usually smells of burnt dust. The AC coils are usually washed by the condensed water anyway, which drains away.
The biggest regret here is the smaller surface area because the filter is not pleated. But replacing these filters slightly more often should do the trick. Ideally one wants 5 inch thick pleated filters, but those cost an arm and a leg.
Oh what I've always bought merv 8 because I thought it filtered more stuff too like pet dander and dust mites
MERV 8 isn't that restrictive. It's a good balance between air flow and filtration I'd say. These basic filters are going to let a lot of junk through. I guess if all someone is worried about is maximum airflow then go for it. I typically stick with MERV 8.

Yeah, these cheap ones have that issue.
If you want clean air, yes.
These are not even pleated (to increase surface area)

Also, thanks OP!
