There are so many different standalone boxes you can acquire for cheap like the HP microserver with Xeon Processor which would be eeons faster than any of these dumb boxes.. Xpenology dsm 7 works stable bare metal or on Esxi.

Yes there is a learning curve but once your system is up and running it works well for years.

Synology s DSM OS is amazing but their hardware is crimped and the higher spec ones are outrageously priced for even the better Procs.

Xpenology is the way to go. I have multiple systems working rock solid for years from DSM 5 to DSM 6, 7 etc. Just don't mess with them and they work just fine.
There are tradeoffs... An HP box or any other DIY will most likely be not as power efficient as a NAS box where they at least gave some fleeting thought to power efficiency (yet another factor is that those super-weak Celerons used for NAS are also much less power-hungry).

Having said that, I would love to see some innovation compared to the tried and true "mini PC" approach. I.e. an ARM-based box that is both highly power-efficient yet capable of normal NAS tasks as well as video transcoding for Plex.

Yes ofcourse that is true, the J4125 Celeron that some of the higher end NAS models have is a very low TDP processor but again does the cost of electricity really matter you that much?

I have real synology Box DS1813, but also did Xpenology on HP N54l. That one does not have a Xeon processor I think has AMD Turion but more tdp than synllogy boxes .

But the nas is so fast and plex etc is a joke on the lower end Synology boxes.

At least the 923+ has the option for multi-gig ethernet. It kills me to see the boxes with NVMe cache but stuck on 2x1GB ethernet.

At the minimum, "network attached storage" or NAS. It's a server that provides storage space to the rest of your network.

However, these Synology boxes can run lots of other applications and fulfill lots of other uses. For example, mine backs up my data to my AWS cloud account, runs a Plex server so I can stream media, and Docker images as well, so you can run just about anything you want it to.

Its pretty much just a question or whether or not you need the Intel cpu. If you do, the 423 is basically the only play. The vast majority of users will never need more than 1gb speeds or the questionably priced expansion unit. I do wish it had 2.5gbe, but given the competition I wouldn't hesitate to suck it up and deal with it.

What happens if I use 3rd party ram, hdd and nvme drives.

I want to transfer some old Seagate desktop drives from my old readynas. And I don't want to pay Synology pieces for their ram.

I also want to buy some cheaper nvme drives compared to synologys.

Do they work, if so what's the disadvantage?

So for those that are interested in more than just file sharing I would recommend something like a refurb Dell Precision Workstation Tower with an 8th gen Intel CPU if you have space for one. They can hold 4 drives and 8th Gen CPU's can support Quick Sync video transcoding for PLEX. It's low power for what it's capable of and you're not limited to NAS firmware/software. Throw UNRAID on it and you can have it be much more than just a file sharing machine and for only around $300 for one with an Intel 8500.

There are pros and cons to this as well: it's probably not quite as reliable as a dedicated NAS and it's going to be a bit more power hungry and MUCH larger but it's much more capable and much cheaper and upgradeable. You can throw in a dedicated GPU for heavier transcoding, a 2.5gb LAN card for faster network access, and a lot more RAM and it's got much newer hardware than the older HP microbox servers.

i still have a very old synology 1510 that i upgraded to 8gb no name ram(matching 4gb sticks). works till this day and still doesn't want to break. bad thing is that it doesn't support the new dsm. only disadvantage is that the CPU can't keep up with the ram and i see it peaking a lot. but for the most part, it just works.

as far as NVME, know that this is just for ready cache and can't be used as storage unless you get the synology that allows that (only 2 of the newer one's can do that from my knowledge)

now if you do the xpenology route, it opens up faster cpu, faster ram, and useing NVME as storage. does it make a difference? depends on use case and electricity cost

i have both 1 synology and 2 Xpenology (soon to be 3), if i were to do it again, i would just do Xpenolgy as recycling my old computers is cheaper than buying a synology.

I have the 920+ and have been loving it as both a Plex server and general backup device. Quite an upgrade from my old Buffalo 4 bay nas. I did upgrade the RAM and add an nvme before I booted it up for the first time so I'm not sure how quick and responsive it is stock. It's great how I have it set up though.
