Only caveat would be the synology form factor is very portable. But the micro server is not a huge arse server like a 3U or 4U its a very small cube box shaped server that can take 4 drives plus 1 more (2.5 inch).
You can also add Quad Nic Lan or SFP port etc on it
Granted Synoly boxes are very nice and small, but if it's a NAS cmon how often will you be moving it around. Usually would sit in a corner in your basement or office etc.
You can also use a old server or custom build your small form NAS Box but those wouldn't be same as the HP Microserver.
The best thing about these HP microservers is they are very robust and reliable. I have N54L running DSM 6.1.2 since more than few year and had it on DSM 5.2 before that.
The thing is you cannot just update to synology firmware updates or risk breaking it.
The Xpenology is a port / hack with that caveat yoi get a much beefier cpu and ram etc.
I have the HP N54L running 4x 10Tb drives (red easy stores) for almost 2 years or more. As long as you don't firmware upgrade there aren't any gotchas.
Yes the one thing is Synology quick connect doesn't work as that needs a legit synology serial, but it is very easy to install Zero Tier or tail scale..I use ZT.. for remote access (vpn) from outside your house

Synology is constantly releasing patches to break Xpenology. First Synology started scanning for non-standard hardware, and would refuse to boot the kernel if they detected hardware they didn't sell.
For awhile, people (like myself) were resorting to buying the same peripherals (LAN cards, for example) to get around that.
Synology finally managed to break Jun's bootloader on 6.2.1, and for nearly 2 years, the only solution was to not update with the latest vulnerability patches
Then Red Pill came out, and the war with Synology started all over with 7.x. Now every time a patch comes out, everyone races to the Xpenology forum to see if it breaks Red Pill.
Quite frankly, it's not worth the hassle.

as far as NVME, know that this is just for ready cache and can't be used as storage unless you get the synology that allows that (only 2 of the newer one's can do that from my knowledge)
now if you do the xpenology route, it opens up faster cpu, faster ram, and useing NVME as storage. does it make a difference? depends on use case and electricity cost
i have both 1 synology and 2 Xpenology (soon to be 3), if i were to do it again, i would just do Xpenolgy as recycling my old computers is cheaper than buying a synology.

One thing I would say though is that the microservers are not quite as "plug n play" as this post suggests. They require a fair amount of dinking around to get them set up. I've set up both an N40 and a Gen8 box as a NAS.
The bays are not hot swappable by default, and require flashing unsupported firmware to become hot swappable. HP's support pages require a support contract to access now, so this can be a pain. Also there are only 5 sata ports, and one is used for the disk drive. So if you want to store your OS on a SSD apart from the rest of the drives you will need to either buy a SATA controller card or use the internal USB port to creatively set up a solution (as I did).
There are huge pros. As you said, the CPUs are much more capable (particularly in Gen8 and up...the N40 is pretty darn slow), and you are more flexible if you don't mind tinkering. I bought a SAS controller for my Gen8 and run TrueNAS with direct disk access for zraid. It's really nice, really fast, and (so far) really reliable.
But for someone just looking to toss disks into an enclosure and go...there are definite merits to a pre-rolled solution like the Synology.
Took a while to format, provision, etc, but I'm sold on NAS! A pleasure to not deal with any cloud services. Synology apps are easy. Photos really works just as easy as Google photos, and instantly backups from my mobile devices.
I'm quite technically knowledge, but I wouldn't have time to build my own NAS. It's a leaning curve learning all the new networking lingo as it is, and just playing around all the features and benefits of a NAS already built gobbles up hours and hours.
Perhaps next time I need another NAS or when my current PC build is outdated in 10 years, it will be he second nature to build NAS.
Plus I paid $500 including hdd so can't complain much.

If you only wanna plug and play should get synology Box and pay their tax.
You are right the hot swap is not enabled off the bat, but flashing bios etc is such a small trivial task for me I totally even forgot about that.
Also I use the UsB port to boot the Xpenology loader so don't need to waste a sata port and also even if you do true nas or free nas that usb port can be used.
Overall I am pretty happy its slightly larger than a DS1813 and I put a Intel Quad NIC 1gig x4 on the back and quite satisfied.
I do docker, plex and tons of other stuff.
My assumption to suggest this was more to IT oriented folks or someone who really wants to take the pain to go through the initial work.
I paid like 250$ for my N54L 4 or 5 years ago..it's been running without a hiccup since then.
The only pain is when jumping from 6 to 7 you gotta wait for Xpenology Developers and even that is optional if you are fine with staying on the same release.
This is not a plug and play, there is significant prep, research, trial and troubleshooting but again we are on SD ๐

If you have no time tinkering or figuring it out or have 0 tech knowledge then don't go this path.

But Xpenology is the same DSM port to run on non synology hardware.
When Iogin to my Xpenology box it acts and behaves like a Synology Box.
But I get not everyone has time to spend hours and days just to setup a NAS so again ymmv.

xpenology basically allows you to run Synology DSM Disk Station manager on Non Synology boxes..you can make DIY a very powerful NAS if cost is not a big concern.
