For anyone that purchases this, be sure to download the Samsung Magician software and confirm or update the firmware. Samsung had a bad batch of firmware on the 2tb 980 Pro that can miscalculate the drive usage which results in it thinking you've exceeded the max safe usage and it will lock the drive to read-only to keep your data "safe". I'm currently dealing with that now through Samsung's warranty service and it's been a frustrating process.

Did you get the Sabrent heatsink or the Samsung official heatsink?

Buy the 990 and spend $10 on a heatsink.

This would be a good deal if the 990 Pro weren't cheaper right now. If you need the heatsink, then that can be acquired for $10.

Also, for PC gamers, there's not much reason to shell out for this compared to something like the Intel 670p which has been $80 for 2 TB for close to a month. You're not going to see more than a 5% difference in load times going with a higher end drive. Maybe DirectStorage will change that, but initial DirectStorage games don't seem to really take much advantage of SSD speed.

Why is the Intel so ridiculously cheap compared to these? Just because it's Gen3, or for other reasons?

However, I'd still go with a Gen4 for one's primary boot/OS drive, if one has a MB and CPU that can run at Gen4, and get a slower and bigger drive for secondary storage, e.g. for games. At these prices you might as well spend a bit more for better overall performance and future-proofing.

I brought two 980 Pro 2TB with heat sinks for my PS5. After formating both, speed was about 6500 MBps.

Samsung charges a premium for the performance and the name. Keep in mind that Intel has exited this business, so it's really Solidigm (SK Hynix) that is selling these now.

I had the same attitude as you and bought a 980 Pro last summer. If I was better educated, I would have bought a cheaper drive for my use case (gaming). It's not as though games in 3-4 years are going to saturate a PCIe Gen4x4 link. A Gen4x4 link is 8 GB/s. Even after accounting for the protocol overheads, you're still getting way faster transfers than a game is ever going to use. In fact, Microsoft, when designing the XBox Series S/X opted for a Gen4x2 link, even though quick load times are a major selling point of that platform.

Only the ones manufactured in 2021 AND with the firmware starting with #3. Gonna be rare to receive 2021 stock 2 years later. But I guess it's just good practice to check anyways

Lol I mean.. "I" wouldn't care or be worried lol, emphasis on the "I" part. I'm also an idiot so probably not the best person to ask lol

If it makes you feel better, I got the 980 pro w/ heatsink for $144 from this deal
