I does have a DRAM package on the controller, and a portion of the TLC NAND is set aside as SLC cache for a write performance boost. The SLC cache size on the 512GB model, according to AnandTech is 15GB. They did not test the 1TB, 2TB, or 4TB models, but it's probably reasonably safe to assume it's a linear progression of cache size.

J just got a 4TB SATA Crucial MX500 for about the same price. This one's cheaper and NVMe, but the Linus tier list puts this one at C-tier and the MX500 at B-tier, even though it's NVMe vs SATA.

Can anyone offer insight into their evaluation there? Why would this be worse than a SATA drive?

SATA severely limits throughput for drives, your top speed would be orders of magnitude lower than with NVME

This is too generalized a statement to be accurate. Lets take as a comparison, a MX500 SATA drive vs a Crucial P3 NVMe. According to the tests on tom's hardware, the MX500 is limited to 500MB/sec due to the SATA protocol. And it stays pretty much the same speed for sequential transfers. The NVMe P3 has a sequential speed much higher than the MX500, until the psedo cache runs out. Then the sequential write speed drops to around 100 MB/sec, which is the native QLC speed, This is several factors LOWER than the SATA drive. In fact, when I look for a drive, I look at tests of speed after the cache is used up.

I suspect this falls under the "it doesn't hurt to try" category and I should point out it's by no means guaranteed that your credit card company would help you out with this especially given the $200 price tag.. however a lot of credit cards do extend the warranty on products you purchase using the card and if they "rule" in your favor (in other words their extended warranty dept decides to give you a break, it doesn't mean they go after the merchant or manufacturer personally or anything like that Stick Out Tongue ) ) they credit your card by the same amount you bought it for. You don't need to mail the defective item back to the credit card company or anything like that either.

How long the warranty is extended for varies (in my card's case one year) and how many hoops they make you jump through varies (american express for example makes it fairly easy to do it online whereupon certain visa cards will force you to fill out a paper by hand and mail it back to them.. kind of insane in this day and age but there you have it)

Personally I like to keep a pdf of my receipt , take a picture of the box and device of anything I purchase particularly if it has the serial number, model number and so forth on it and keep that info saved ... my credit card company has been merciful to me and has honored the extended warranty on more than one occasion Smilie ..

The SN850X is a great deal at $300, probably the best drive on the market.

If you want, good support at this price, really a P3/P3 Plus isn't bad. People make a big deal about large file transfers, but it's a pretty rare case for most people. There's a clear trade off. The P3 is also a better option for laptops because it is a very cool power efficient drive and singled sided for 4TB. Neither this drive or the SN850X will fit in many laptops.
