If you purchase by 4/5 a flight that is before 5/24, then any flights you book that fly between 8/15-9/30 you can bring your companion for free. You can buy the 8/15-9/30 tickets anytime but won't be able to add your companion until 8/15 as per previous similar promos.

CSR confirmed that if I cancelled my existing round trip flight that I had already booked for October and rebooked it, the deal would work, and indeed it did. She read over the fine print to make sure. If you are unsure, give them a call to confirm.
Just note that the Companion Pass dropped into folk's accounts at random times during the first day (I was following a thread on reddit about it), so DO NOT expect to get it at midnight on 8/15 if you're trying to use it for a flight on 8/15, I didn't get it until randomly in the late morning PST and it was nerve wracking all night as I wanted to make sure I added my companion to an existing vacation flight before it booked up.
Afterwards I was able to use it for about 5 flights in January and February. Well worth it if you already need to book Southwest by 5/24.

"Companion flies free* with you" + companion pass being a pass for your companion seems pretty self explanatory.
You think your companion gets to fly free by themselves? i.e. they don't need to be your companion on the flight? Or that you also get to fly for free using their companion pass?
Please explain how you're arriving at whatever your conclusion is...
