If you know where you want to travel (for the second flight), go ahead and book the primary traveler at whatever fare tier you want. If you are afraid the flight will be sold out by the time you have a companion pass, then book a second seat for the future companion. That way, you have a seat for the companion. If you can, use points for the second seat, as those are fully refundable. Or buy business select if you don't mind having the cash tied up for a bit. When you get the companion pass, cancel the 2nd seat. If there is a seat on the plane, it does not matter fare it is -- you can use the companion pass for it.

Grandma and Grandpa can travel basically for 1/2 off and visit all the grandchildren who live across the country. If the flight is delayed or cancelled they are in no rush to get there. Great deal!

Yea you need to buy a ticket for 8/15-9/30. How would you expect to fly and your companion is free if you don't have a ticket?

If you purchase by 4/5 a flight that is before 5/24, then any flights you book that fly between 8/15-9/30 you can bring your companion for free. You can buy the 8/15-9/30 tickets anytime but won't be able to add your companion until 8/15 as per previous similar promos.

Silly question, so the companion pass is only valid for August 15, 2023 and September 30, 2023? Or would it mean that once you have the companion pass, it may work for other periods in which they open it up for? I am not sure if I will be traveling again during 8/15 to 9/30, so wondering if it is worth it to do the hassle of rebooking my Apr trip to get the companion pass. Thanks!

Any idea if you could book the first flight and not even get on it and still get the companion pass? Already traveling during that second window and booking the cheapest possible flight in April/may to get the companion pass would save me a couple hundred on that trip.

I already had a flight scheduled with travel completed by 5/24 so I met the requirements to get the pass. I registered for the promotion on the SW site and confirmed that there were seats available on the 'original' flights and the price was actually a couple of bucks cheaper if I booked now. So I called Southwest. The agent cancelled the original itinerary and made new reservations on the same flights and confirmed that I am enrolled in the Companion Pass promotion. Plus I saved $2.01 by rebooking the flight!
