If you know where you want to travel (for the second flight), go ahead and book the primary traveler at whatever fare tier you want. If you are afraid the flight will be sold out by the time you have a companion pass, then book a second seat for the future companion. That way, you have a seat for the companion. If you can, use points for the second seat, as those are fully refundable. Or buy business select if you don't mind having the cash tied up for a bit. When you get the companion pass, cancel the 2nd seat. If there is a seat on the plane, it does not matter fare it is -- you can use the companion pass for it.

Grandma and Grandpa can travel basically for 1/2 off and visit all the grandchildren who live across the country. If the flight is delayed or cancelled they are in no rush to get there. Great deal!

Yea you need to buy a ticket for 8/15-9/30. How would you expect to fly and your companion is free if you don't have a ticket?

If you purchase by 4/5 a flight that is before 5/24, then any flights you book that fly between 8/15-9/30 you can bring your companion for free. You can buy the 8/15-9/30 tickets anytime but won't be able to add your companion until 8/15 as per previous similar promos.

doubt it; SWA likely prefers that you'd book a new flight at higher fares laugh out loud; when the promo was announced, fares did also go higher

1. You have to be a RR member
2. You have to register for the promotion in your account
3. You have to book 1 RT or 2 OW tickets by 4/5 and fly by 5/24
4. Once completed, you qualify for a companion pass that'll be valid between 8/15-9/30
5. A companion pass is one person who flies for free (+tax/fees) when you book a flight during that 8/15-9/30 window

No, you can't choose different people. CP is for one person (read the details on their site, i've heard you can change it maybe once per year? but I doubt you can with this one)
No, you can't use points to purchase the initial flight to qualify. Has to be a revenue flight (travel credits do count, most vouchers do not).
No, you can't book a flight for someone else and get the CP. It's tied to your RR number so you have to book and you have to fly.
Yes, you can cancel an existing flight and rebook (just check that prices haven't changed first)
No, you can't "change/rebook" the existing flight without cancelling first.
Imagine being this rude AND stubbornly wrong. It is simple, you are buying two to get one free which is not a true BOGO. Those are the facts. No argument to be had.

Such good help from all! One question left: should not purchase the first passengers ticket too much earlier than 8/15, otherwise the fight could be all booked up by the time the CP booking period is open. Correct?

Cancelled the original ticket after confirming the price was the same. Paid with the credit from the original flight. The credit is immediately available and can be seen in your account
