You are not the first, just 20 years too late.

what would be the input format for that recorder? I was looking specifically for a way to directly transfer video from DVD's to Laserdiscs

Is there a point to doing this? One can rip DVDs to hard drive as mp4s\wmvs\mkvs fairly easily and play them over your home network with any device that supports DLNA so why would you want to deal with laser disks at this point?

Given the fact that you will never get better than the original media resolution (DVD) imo you are just wasting time and money but to each his own (and that assumes it can even be done at this point). There are programs to rip dvds and blu-rays and modern smart TVs will upscale to 4k to varying degrees of effectiveness and you already own the DVDs, so what exactly do you gain by trying to go to a very obsolete technology that in the end is not getting you a better picture than what you already have?

Well laserdic is an analog format that is just above SD at best:
What resolution is composite video?
Composite video is a single-channel analog video transmission format that carries standard-definition video at 480i or 576i resolution. Unlike the higher-quality S-Video (two channels) and even higher-
quality component video (three or more channels), video information is encoded on a single channel

So watching it on your TV is going to probably be disappointing I would just save it for another few years until it has some value to someone but not today.

i'm not necessarily hoping for it to be better than DVDs. some people prefer the way records sound vs CDs. i simply enjoy laserdisc. it is a great technology that was under-utilized.
