i've had this one for a couple years.

contrasted to the X2, imo the X3 has the better high-end (altho slightly sibilant) and works well for analytical listening, with great attention-to-detail and clarity. soundstage is similar (the series being known for their wide soundstage).

bass is very lacking with much to be desired. i can't help but wish more were there when listening, and i don't consider myself a bass head. considering the X2 had amazing sub-bass for an open-back. that said, the bass is clean.

for build: both are designed well, durable, built to last, and comfortable.

if you're used to more-common consumer headphones, it will take time to adjust to these

if you go into it knowing what you want and what to expect, i think one would be happy getting them

Not true, you do not need one. Just 30 ohms and 98 dB highly efficient, so it will get very loud and not strain the audio out in a laptop and the like.

It reproduces a lot of detail so better electronics will probably sound even better, but not like some competitors (Sennheiser HD 650 -300 ohms or the recently $99 AKG K612 -120 ohms) whose high resistances do not work so well without an amp.

I hated the X3's, if you like the X2 /X2HR sound sig, don't expect it here. I think they dropped the ball on this one. I found them to be very sibilant, and thin sounding, unlike that warmer thick sound from the X2

From what I read, you're gonna need a usb DAC/Amp if you don't got a solid sound card

Great Price if you got one. I gotta find my old Fiio Alpen

I had these and ended up returning them. They are a steal for $99 with a few caveats. My biggest issue was the cables. For some reason Phillips went with a proprietary design and both cables are very long and terrible for desktop use. There are very few aftermarket options since I think there are two or three headphones that use this setup. These could have been killer if they had not gotten cute with the cables. It is a shame because these could have been a default recommendation. I don't think the bass is lacking, but they are not cannons like the X2. These are more of a flat audiophile tune.

The sound quality and comfort was good. I already owned the Sennheiser 660s which is why I did not keep these. Also, quick tip, the Audeze LCD-1 cable is shorter and the cheapest way I found to get an after market cable.

See my recommendation below.
Movie watching with the X2 is great because the slight lack of bass means the loud action scenes won't destroy your ears. I use it also for gaming for the same reason. Everything else like listening on my PC or my phone, I use Spotify's equalizer settings and bump up the 2 low ends 50% and 25% respectively, and give it a touch higher on the high end for a V shaped sound. It sounds amazing once you bump the bass. Death Stranding's OST is a prime example of how much you can push these headphones with the bass bumped.

I have a pair of Sony XM'3s and honestly, these sound way better considering its a clean sound but also open/ wider soundstage.

Did you mean to say movie watching the X3 is great because of the lack of bass? I thought the X2 is the one that has bass?

X2 has -4dB and X3 has -6dB. They aren't too much different. But yes, movie watching is easier on the ears, especially with movies like Interstellar because even though it has negative bass, it's still present and there when it needs to be. You could always get a portable DAC but I never liked them because they change the signature sound rather than just apply an EQ over it. But like I said, I only really need proper upped bass with music.

The X3 is lighter and more comfortable than the X2. Too bad Philips used double pole input rather than the much more convenient single pole input on the X2.

For the sound, the X3 has much better vocals and treble, but less bass. It also doesn't clamp as hard compared to the X2. Honestly speaking having owned the X1, X2, and X3 if you have the X2 skip this as the sound quality isn't that much of a difference.

It is single pole and channel separated. Very unusual wiring scheme which take away almost all aftermarket cables. This is the biggest fault of the headphone IMO. I looked for a long time and only found $60 cables which kind of defeats the point.

The X2 is very nice. The single 3.5mm plug is really nice when you have a third party cord with a microphone integrated for use with just about anything. You can still use a clip-on microphone with the X3 but it becomes an extra cable to manage.

Are there any cheap replacement cables for these pair of headphones? I see online replacements are over like $50 since it is a specific type of cable, but maybe I am just not searching the right thing.
