i've had this one for a couple years.

contrasted to the X2, imo the X3 has the better high-end (altho slightly sibilant) and works well for analytical listening, with great attention-to-detail and clarity. soundstage is similar (the series being known for their wide soundstage).

bass is very lacking with much to be desired. i can't help but wish more were there when listening, and i don't consider myself a bass head. considering the X2 had amazing sub-bass for an open-back. that said, the bass is clean.

for build: both are designed well, durable, built to last, and comfortable.

if you're used to more-common consumer headphones, it will take time to adjust to these

if you go into it knowing what you want and what to expect, i think one would be happy getting them

Not true, you do not need one. Just 30 ohms and 98 dB highly efficient, so it will get very loud and not strain the audio out in a laptop and the like.

It reproduces a lot of detail so better electronics will probably sound even better, but not like some competitors (Sennheiser HD 650 -300 ohms or the recently $99 AKG K612 -120 ohms) whose high resistances do not work so well without an amp.

I hated the X3's, if you like the X2 /X2HR sound sig, don't expect it here. I think they dropped the ball on this one. I found them to be very sibilant, and thin sounding, unlike that warmer thick sound from the X2

I picked up the X2 from the last deal. For the price they are awesome. I hear these are better in some way and less in others. If I did not have the X2's i would try these for $99.

Thanks, seems to gel with ratings comparison. Been using the x2s recording and mixing and have been very pleased.

Supposedly, wearing these will get you in the door at some weird costume sex parties hosted in mansions. YMMV

From what I read, you're gonna need a usb DAC/Amp if you don't got a solid sound card

Great Price if you got one. I gotta find my old Fiio Alpen

Are there any cheap replacement cables for these pair of headphones? I see online replacements are over like $50 since it is a specific type of cable, but maybe I am just not searching the right thing.
Nope they are all expensive and the stock ones are terrible. Biggest issue I have with these. Look up the Audeze lcd-1 cable. It is the cheapest one I could find.

In for one!

I researched these recently and have to echo what several people here are mentioning. The X2HR has been described as much better with the bass, while mids and treble on the X3 are a slight, but not a great improvement over the X2HR. The original list price of $299 is a phantasy price that IMHO is not justified. For $99 new though, they may be quite a bargain. The availability of balanced cables is also a nice add-on in this price range.

My experience is about the X2. I don't have the X3. I bought a sennheiser 598SE for $99 and x2 for $199 a few years ago. The X2 fell apart and the 598 is still like new. I liked the sound of X2 but the build quality was bad for extended use.

Thanks for this insight.

I took the plunge for the Fidelio X3 at this price point; and they were already delivered via Amazon in 1 day! First listen plugged into my iFi Zen DAC V2 [amazon.com] single ended is everything I could have hoped for....right up there with my Sennheiser HD600's which incidentally have a very long cable and proprietary connectors as well, that gets few complaints. No complaint about the bass either, and if one needs more, just hit the bass boost on the Zen DAC and be overwhelmed.

I have ordered this 4.4mm to 2.5mm adapter [amazon.com] to utilize the balanced mode on the Zen DAC.

Also recommend the Qudelix-5K [amazon.com] if you wish to try both SE or balanced 2.5mm....best other $100 I've spent on audio lately....highly recommend!
