Got a couple different ones from amazon & this one looked cheap. The plastic wasnt great. I kind of like the shape but its big. Went with this :

Had to drill through the wire hole bigger to get wires through.

I installed one of these in November, it was pretty easy and looks clean. Works well with. my Nest hello and I had no issue fitting the adapter thing inside the slim housing. I would buy it again, especially for under $6, I paid $15

Same way it interacts with Ring. Have the right size transformer and have your smart doorbell connected. When someone rings the bell it closes the contact and makes the mechanical chime go off.

Right size transformer? Is that why my doorbell doesn't work anymore after a year of my ring installed?

Depends on the type of ring doorbell you bought. Some of them support physical doorbell I.e doorbell pro. Ring video doorbells only supports Chime or App.

More than likely if you didn't have the right sized transformer, the Ring would not have worked to begin with.
