Outside of ANC performance, I am curious what specs are you comparing?
XM5 saw downgraded drivers from 40mm to 30mm.

AKG:
Driver: 40mm
Frequency response 10Hz – 24kHz
Impedance 32ohms
Sensitivity 110dB
Bluetooth version 5.0
Battery life 25 hours (BT & NC on)
Weight 322g

Sony:
DRIVER UNIT
30mm
FREQUENCY RESPONSE(BLUETOOTH® COMMUNICATION)
20Hz-20,000Hz (44.1kHz sampling) 20Hz-40,000Hz (LDAC 96kHz sampling 990kbps)
IMPEDANCE (OHM)
48 ohm(1kHz) (when connecting via the headphone cable with the unit turned on) ,
16 ohm(1kHz) (when connecting via the headphone cable with the unit turned off)
SENSITIVITIES (DB/MW)
102dB(1kHz) / mW (when connecting via the headphone cable with the unit turned on) , 100dB / mW(1kHz) (when connecting via the headphone cable with the unit turned off)
BLUETOOTH® VERSION
Bluetooth Specification Version5.2

So AKG has better lower and higher frequencies over Bluetooth, a bigger driver, and possibly better impedance on Bluetooth. They are not even a competitor in ANC and have similar battery life.
You cannot really compare sound quality of headphones by looking at a specs sheet. Concretely, I doubt you can hear frequencies above 20kHz. Tuning plays a big role but isn't listed on a spec sheet. You are best looking at an actual frequency response graph rather than a range.

I received it and it's almost new looking. Other than by looking how else can we confirm it's previously used or new?

Thanks for the tip! Just purchased.

re: $60 AKGs, I too purchased these too a few weeks ago. They have excellent build quality but unfortunately two major issues
  1. Cannot Disable ANC: this is a huge problem if you want to use this outdoors when it's mildly windy (e.g. walking the dog)
  2. Weak Fit: circular ear pads leave air gaps and aren't as comfortable
I'm going to keep the AKGs as backups but they probably won't get much use. Sadge Frown

Taking the gamble and hope it's in like-new condition otherwise secondipity makes the buyer pay for return shipping🤷
No such thing as a refurbished speaker or headphones.

They cleaned it, that's all.

Not meaning to threadcrap, but I just bought a pair of refurbished Bose QC45 (currently refurb'd going for $229).

I'm happy with them thus far (USB-C charging, multipoint bluetooth). Lightweight and comfortable. Unfortunately, only one level of "transparent" listening (compared to the Bose 700s several levels). But the ANC is pretty good: really filters out the room conversations.

Doesnt the ambient aware feature basically turn off ANC?

They just gave a gimmicky name for it.

Pulled the trigger. Watched some YouTube videos and read some reviews and these seem to be right in line, and better in some aspects, as Bose QC45s. Cheapest I see the Bose right now is via Costco or Sam's for $299 (new). Hopefully these refurbished models come through like new.

I will answer my own question: These headphones do NOT provide a mic signal through the 3.5mm cable. Something to keep in mind if you intended to use for comms on PS4/Xbox or a PC using the jack.

Some solutions to the problem are to use a replacement cable that includes an inline mic (ala wired earbud style) or a Vmoda Boompro mic.

Unfortunately, that's a dealbreaker for me.

Does the dualsense/dualshock mic not work if you have headphones wired in?

I wish they had XM3s - from what I see they're better than XM5 in almost every aspect except phone calls

Just wondering about product quality if so many are available to be sold refurbished??????????
As someone who used to work in an electronic store. Whenever a customer came in with any believable (non-immediately testable) excuse we would process the warranty replacement. Some may have had issues and they were fixed while others were fake warranty claims to get a new pair prior to the warranty expiring.

XM4s are 180. Been looking at those because they're able to fold. Are the these worth the extra $40?
When these came out I thought the consensus was that the xm4s were still better. Thanks for posting this, I've been waiting for more refurbished to be available!

Why so many refurbish of this headphone?
Because people are returning them, but I bet you already knew that

I was a long time Sony XM2 user (and occasional XM4 user via my wife), and I picked up the XM5s from Secondipity last year. I prefer Sony's noise cancellation and sound profile over comparable Bose models. A few personal observations:
  • The headphones arrived in flawless condition with all original accessories. Aside from the packaging, I wouldn't have known they were not brand new. I've had zero issues with them.
  • As others have said, there's a big difference between higher end noise cancelling headphones like these versus cheaper ones. You can really tell when it comes to comfort, the quality of the noise cancellation, mic performance, and overall sound. Of course all of those things can be subjective, but as someone who has used a lot of noise cancelling headphones over the years, Sony's XM line is tough to beat in it's price range.
  • The overall comfort of the XM5s is a noticeable step above the already amazing XM4s. A big part of that is how light they are. It's pretty crazy how light they are actually.
  • Speaking of how light they are, the XM5s feel like they're more fragile. So far I've had zero problems with them, but I do find myself handling them a little more carefully.
  • Noise cancellation is slightly better on the XM5s than previous Sony XMs. The XM5s do have auto ANC versus selectable ANC on previous models. I talk a little bit more about my personal experience with that here. The short version - if you're typically stationary while using these in an environment where the sound doesn't swing wildly - office, plane/train, etc - the XM5s are better. If you're moving around a lot or have big changes in environmental sound - like walking around a city - the XM4s, Bose, or Apple will offer a more consistent ANC experience. The idea of auto ANC when the noise around is changing makes sense, but in practice it's not the best thing. Fingers crossed Sony adds the option to turn it off (but I'm not holding my breath).
  • Mic quality is quite good on the XM5s. People can definitely hear me clearly and background noise is cut out more. A step up over previous models for sure.
  • Folding - No, the XM5s don't fold up, but the ear cups do turn for them to go flat (albeit in the wrong direction if you wear them on your neck). While the case does has a larger overall footprint, it's not as thick as the case for the XM4s. So depending on how you're carrying them, the XM5s could be a better travel fit. For years I've had to cram my XM2 case into my main travel bag, and it was always a pain due to the case being just a little too thick. I often found myself clipping them to the outside of the bag. But the XM5 case slides in perfectly. Pros and cons to each, but the XM5 case works even better for my travel setup. I feel like most people complaining about the XM5s not folding haven't actually used them.
  • I have the black XM5s. They're a fingerprint magnet. Smudges everywhere.
  • The XM5s do not come with the old dual plug airline adapter. Less of an issue as most modern planes don't use this plug, but something to keep in mind as previous XM models included it.
  • Charging - The XM5s have a version of quick charge, but I don't find this to be a huge plus given the tremendous battery life they both have.

Overall, I've been extremely happy with the XM5s, and I'd absolutely buy them again.
