Is this technically better than buying the dell inspiron 16 5625 cpu model for 500 (and upgrading ram to 16gb for ~100)?

Most likely, as ddr 4 32 gb of ram should easily be under $100.

Looks like Dell moved price back up to $999 from $699.

Your option is definitely better IMO. I just got the Inspiron 16 with only 8 GB and I bought a 16x2 kit direct from Crucial, with guaranteed comparability, for $63 with tax. The upgrade should be very simple and easy.

This model has a bigger SSD (1TB vs 512GB) and is 8 core vs 6 core. So if that doesn't matter to you then yes it would be

You lose out on two cores, 512GB of storage, and a better iGPU

Yes, but for my use the trade off was good. I should have started with "it was definitely better in my case." Especially since I got mine for $424 tax, paid for with 2x $200 Dell Amex Platinum credits + Dell rewards I had to use up. That was better than having to put $600+ on one Platinum card and only get to use $200.

I should have included that in my original post, but I was being lazy. 🤣
