Generally, these blow warmed air directed slightly downward and out. The top of the unit never gets warm at all. Chances are if you have a receiver near your tv, it's going to get more heat from that than it ever will from your fireplace

Not seeing a weight in the description. Clearly states it's mdf which is a blanket bad thing but I normally use weight to determine the sturdiness of stuff like this.

We have one of similar size that's also mdf and is very extremely solid. I'm about 190 and would have no qualms standing on it. Ours was 200lbs shipping weight.

I have a different one but white looks great in my house. The piece is light mdf but we don't put anything that heavy on it so perfectly fine for us. Ours wasn't advertised for a TV. This still looks good. I would just pay another $30 for a TV wall mount.

Why can't there be anything like this in this price range without fireplace! I need one but not with the fireplace as that space is lost.

The fireplace part is usually separate. You have to slide it in through the back and it screws in on the sides. (At least the one I have which is similar) you could just not put the fireplace part in and use that part as an open cabinet for DVDs or something else.

I find this product slightly comical. Why do people tend to have TV above fireplace? Because the room had a fireplace and mantle which chairs centered around, and when people started mounting tvs, it's a pretty obvious place to put the TV as a centerpiece to watch. The problem being it usually raised the TV to where you had to look up to watch it: not particularly comfortable.
Then we have this product which seems to be made after seeing many TV mounted over mantles.... Oi.
