Considering the M1 14" Macbook Pro is still $1499, an M2 Pro 14" Macbook Pro for $350 more IS tempting. If you can find a CC with a "spend $2000 get $500 back" offer, this would be slick

Using m1 pro 14" with 32gb ram. Not sure about how m2 pro is, because I find myself very satisfied with the current machine. Having said that, if you can find a m1 pro deal, you won't be disappointed.

This is the standard educational price. Yes, not everyone can get it but for the most part, Apple is pretty lenient with it.

I'm loving my 14 inch M1 Pro from $1,549 Costco clearance. M2 would be great but for me, not worth the extra $300

I posted this yesterday in another apple thread and didn't get any opinions, so I thought I'd ask here as well in the hopes that someone might have advice or be able to convince me what to do haha… basically I got an open box 14" m2 16gb for $1750 but then the 16" M1 Max 32gb went on sale for $2499 brand new (kind of a killer deal), so I grabbed both and figured I'd return whichever I didn't like as much. Problem is I'm loving them both!

14" has the perfect portable form factor and is so nice on my lap if I'm on the sofa or in bed but the 16" has more spacious keyboard, beautiful screen (truly feels more immersive than the 14" despite only being an extra two inches), better speakers and double the RAM and ssd (1tb versus 512gb).

If you guys were in my shoes which one would you pick and why? I just can't make up my mind. I'm worried I'll regret the 16" because of how bulky and cumbersome it is but the reality is I don't travel much. Mainly use it around the house. But even then it's a lot heavier in bed or on my lap… but the screen is so nice.

Then again, I have an external monitor I can plug the 14" into so screen size isn't necessarily a deal breaker. So it's a real toss up for me. I think I'm more focused on the extra RAM and ssd space for the price difference.

I would wait. Apple has stopped making m2, and just announced this AM that their laptop sales are down 40%. The market has spoken so Apple is going to need to move out existing inventory in the next few months. So if you want higher spec macbook (the ones Apple marks up features 10x or more) then if you wait 4-6 weeks when they are really sucking wind you will see even better deals.

As for how to prioritize, I would prioritize RAM first then get a pro processor if you can, and then storage. The reason why is you can always add external storage (I did this for WAY less than Apple overcharge) but for me 16 GB is table stakes on the progs I use and the pro chip is good for my video editing as the acceleration really makes a diff. I settled on the m1pro/16/512 it was $1600 now its less. The reason why is the m1 pro > m2 an you get the faster RAM/SSD and TBH the m2 pro doesn't really bring anything to the table for the hundreds more. If you have cash to burn, then by all means proceed.

There is no game changing in Apple anymore, just what features they hold back to make your life miserable, gouge you for RAM and SSD, and hold back innovative features like AV1 enc/dec. Maybe the m3 fixes that or the m4 or the m5...

If you are a "normal" user I hate to say it but a regular m2 w/ 8 GB will satisfy most users.

I would stay away from 16" because it is super heavy and large. If you need screen real-estate do a sidecar (an ipad) or a cheap external monitor if you really need it. Even my new 14 MBP is significantly heavier than my outgoing 14" MBP 2019.

We KNOW this will hit $1599 at some point (as the previous model did), so unless you really NEED it I'd wait personally.

Exactly this. Sales are down and the M3 is supposed to be announced at WWDC in 2 months. The price on this will go lower.

On a side note, I just received a 16" M1 Max with 32GB/1TB from my employer today. The thing is a boat anchor. It reminds me of the days when I had to lug around a ThinkPad W-class device, though the performance and battery life on the Mac are light years better. All that said, I can't imagine ever going bigger than the 14" Pro, and would have much preferred a well-kitted Air M2.

Thanks a lot. You said m1>m2 but the videos i watched on YouTube showed the m2 was faster than m1… I believe the M1 Max (the 16" I have) is about equal to the m2 pro. But you're saying the M1 Pro is better than the m2 pro? Why is that?

m1pro > m2. Did not say m1pro is better than m2pro, my point was there is no great reason other than maybe 10% faster to pay hundreds more. I guess I'm saying the m2pro is a nothing burger if you can get a m1pro deal. In fact it may be easier to get a m1pro since Apple shutting down m2 production.

I also have m2 pro mini and mi1 pro macbook so I can directly compare. I personally don't see much difference in them at all, even on creative work. The big thing for me was monitor support, I require 3 monitors for my trading apps and the m1pro only support 2 monitor. I played with displaylink dock and they just aren't clear enough for my needs. Other than that I would have just used my macbook and not purchased a mini. I also used synergy which is great, but then I am having to mess with two platforms.

You can't go wrong with either, these machines replaced x86 versions (4-5 years old) and these are many times faster, quieter, cooler, and the battery goes on forever. The glaring issue being monitor support. I would be happy if they did AV1, but hey its Apple.
