I eventually got on the Nvidia Shield bandwagon and it does some thing super well, and if you want to spend hours tinkering, not much out there that is better in terms of being able to tinker but also having a solid foundation. But it would freeze up sometimes, or have weird playback issues in Plex. So I bought one AppleTV intended for just our bedroom, and it was a revelation. Lightning quick and immediately loaded apps we use most based on our Apple ID. Beyond just airplay, the kids can screen mirror their iPads when playing games and it just works on the first try.
So I am saying, don't get scared away by the people in here that talk about $15 Android devices. We were daily driving three of the top end of Android streaming devices with one shield per TV and if all you want is a great front end streaming box which enough power for the kids to maybe play some iOS games on or whatever, there is no comparison right now.
If you want to tinker and sideload apps or whatever else, which is fun too, then the Apple TV is maybe the worst platform for it. Like most things in life, it's rarely that one thing is good and another is bad, but they shine in different ways.
Apple TV is by far the easiest to use. Simple UI. Roku and Amazon are so cluttered. Google TV is ok. Apple 4K TV is Super fast. Doesn't bog down like the Amazon stuff. Like why does the Hardrive get filled up so quick on those?
Ethernet connection is actually 1gb speed unlike the Firestick/cube that max at 100mb/s unless you get an otg connector.
If only you can sideload Kodi or the like. Then it would be perfect. I'll never get rid of my Amazon Cube 2nd gen and 4k Firesticks because of that.
I use to have a HTPC in every room. But when I got TV's that were 4K, I've retired them. Made one into a pfsense box.
If you can afford it, get it. If you can't afford it, Get an Amazon Firestick 4K TV for the fact it being so cheap and the sideloading capabilities.
If the original Ice Films was still working, I'd have all 4K capable HTPCs. For those that used XBMC with Ice Films before Kim.com got thrown in jail, would agree with me 100%

Here it goes
I would even take it if you pay me to take it.
Ok, in reality, I got the 64GB, not sure what gen but I got it for the remote. For my purpose, Apple TV boxes seem the same boring streaming devices to me...but no ads...that's a good thing.

My house is wired for gigabit, I would be using the box for a bunch of regular streaming services and local/remote streaming in Plex. Nothing fancy, I just want something responsive, stable, and reliable.
The only thing I can think of would be using the Apple TV to stream Steam games from my PC using Moonlight or the SteamLink app. I'm pretty sure Roku doesn't support game controllers, so I suppose that would be an advantage to Apple. But I have a SteamLink box now and don't use it much as it is.
The performance and polish of the Apple TV is like night and day compared to the Roku Ultra. Also, no ads in the Apple TV.
I also have a newer Samsung TV and its built-in apps are not as good compared to the Apple TV because TV manufacturers purposely use weaker processors which sometimes cause issues with streaming. The Apple TV has yet to struggle with any of the streaming apps that I've used.
The Apple TV is just the best streaming device out there in terms of performance and ease of use.
