I'm not sure about the latest models now, but I have a GE dishwasher that is 2016-2000 era, and there is a common problem where the control board go bust and can't detect whether the dishwasher has its doors opened or closed, making it inop.
Sometimes unplugging it for an extended period solves it, if you want to wait that long....mine magically started working after 2 months of not working, the 2nd time around (first time failure works after a week), replacing the part is $150 and secondary market parts are $110, with no guarantee that's a lasting solution, with some reporting the same issue within a year or 2
I have been looking at sub 500 dishwashers not from GE for this reason.
You guys have any thoughts on those with 3 racks? Are they just gimmick? I don't see any of these models have the 3rd rack.
We recently bought a Bosch with the 3rd rack and it's fantastic for silverware and odd size pieces like can openers, ladles, etc. Also the Bosch is by far the best dishwasher I've owned
I've had the Frigidaire top control I stainless for almost a year. Love it. Cycle seems a bit long at over 2 hours, but I'm guessing that's common now with "eco friendly" dishwashers?
I'm new to the dishwasher game and in the market for one. Other than reliability (obviously), what are some basic/essential features a dishwasher must have?

I'd argue there are no essentials, they're all quality of life related.
Noise level and component quality are the main differentiating factors. Lower db = higher price, with a clear correlation in price and (quality of) features offered. More plastic = slower drying and more chance of breaking or clunky action.
I avoided the chopper drains.. Unless you have dumb kids, just another thing that can break and we're already well adjusted to removing all solids.
To the one guys point go costco. They had one $399 last week, 51 or 52 db, no stainless tub or third rack, but had a chopper drains, free install and haul away was included. Chopper drains apparently breaks after 5 years but is warrantied for parts (but needs to be pulled out and flipped over to be replaced).
I went for the $499 47db with third rack and stainless tub. Came a week later, installed, hauled away, done. Love it. Last one was 11 years old and jets weren't super powerful anymore. Didn't want to get fleeced if it died randomly.
